None of these numbers really means anything of course, because until Ableton makes serious improvements in the software, then saying Live is slower on a Mac because of the Mac platform or processor is a lie.

whaatttt??? I''m no computer guru, but I don't think Ableton is to blame fot the macs being slower that pc's. I know the OS' are different, and that processer speed comparisons aren't to scale..., but pc's are faster at a lot of things, Live is one of them. On my pc Live 2.0.3 is awesome, I could offer minor suggestions, but compared to the (crap) software out there, saying live needs serious improvements is a bit of a stretch.

i'm with alex on this. I've been able to use loads of effects and tracks in other programs (namely protools and logic), and ableton is a dog on the mac. because my other programs work great, i don't blame the mac.

Don't get me wrong, as I love live, but I won't be able to use it "live" on my mac until they Altivec optimize. It's flat out that simple. The question is will they do it, and if so when. I completely respect the fact that they're a small company, and have to manage resources effectively, but it's scary how imbalanced some software works with or without the optimization.

Well, after reading these comments and hearing this elsewhere as well, I guess I won't be purchasing LIVE anytime soon...and have to look for an alternative. I bought a 667mhz TiBook last June expressly to do audio (mostly VO, some singing), and I'm waiting for delivery of my Metric Halo ULN-2. LIVE seemed like the type of app I could really create with and give form to my weird ideas...but if LIVE is a dog on a Mac, esp. only 667mhz, then it's not worth my $$$. I *could* work in OS 9, but I don't want to. Could have bought a PC laptop, but not use it with a ULN-2 for quite some time (till MH writes the drivers). Hope Ableton is reading this...I've been watching this app ever since it came out, but this is discouraging. It really should be optimized for Altivec.

I recently got a 1 Ghz Powerbook, funny to see that live is running better on my 3 year old Pentium-III notebook. Isn't that scary???

I'm really dissapointed...

Well, year almost over and still no sign of 'em. Glad I went with Monolakes reasoning in this thread personally and got to keep my left testicle.

Hmm, I know it sounds unlikely, but Apple did declare 2003 "year of the laptop".

I can't believe that this 'bold' statement is based purely on the 17" Powerbook announced in the first month of the year.

Me thinks there must be a biggie coming up, as the 17" Mac performance is miserable compared to high-end (but still cheaper than Mac) pc notebooks.

Me 3. I can put a ton of PLuggo VST's on tracks in Logic 5, and some really CPU intensive hogs at that. I can load about 4 per track and run 12+ tracks before I start getting any issues.

It's kidn of bumming me out now. I am ssupposed to be going to NYC to play in January and I'll be doing it in Live 2.1.1 because 3 isn't cutting it. So far, I have been very pleased with Live but this suuuuucks.

Older Powerbooks used to run OK with apps like Logic, DP 3.11,…
But these days seem to be gone with OSX, at least with DP4 which is a plague compared to its OS9 version. On a new Pbook alu 1 ghz, I usually work with 12 to 14 tracks and a few FX (but no reverb in first class in any case). Maybe mac users should get a refund because they cannot use any decent reverb with Live

I hear that! I'm a wee bit tired of getting boned on this. Next lappie is gonna be a PC I think. For LIVE only.

For now, I'd love to be able to use 3, but it looks liek I'm gonna just render some loops w/FX in it and use 2.1.1 in shows. Humph.

Their other things then only prosessor speed to add to the ekvation i run both PC and Mac fore Audio things and the Mac is a LOT more stabile then the pc and when i get my new G5 i´l trow the pc away!!!

Hmmmm. That's strange. You're doing something wrong then. I agree LIve lags behind big time in terms of Mac performance, but I've seen so many renowned artists perform with Live on PowerBooks and iBooks, and they seemed quite happy, so why it shouldn't be good enough for you is beyond me.

And mind you, these artists aren't nobodies either:
