Hey Ryan, you were right all along, my humble apologies.

Check this shit out:

I ran out and bought a new PC this afternoon. Decked out to the nines, plexiglass case and stripes and all that phat overclocking shit. For only $19.95, plus tax.

Not 30 minutes after I installed Live 3.0.2, a mob of naked ladies crowded around me to listen to DJ Alex's new hot, wet, steamy, 500-clip, ready-for-radio remix of your latest club hit.

I can't believe I doubted you. It seems all so clear in hindsight, now, as I lie here in my post-orgasmic lull.

You're my hero! Where do I sign up to be the baby's daddy of your mother?

Cheers,
Alex

I want a steel cage match or nothing at all.

It's time we settle this Mac vs. PC debate the old Navy way: the first one to die, loses!

the solution is rather obvious

Make Macs as affordable as PCs...
make PC software as wonderful as Macs...

problem solved.

Nah, it's traditional to have a minority making a big noise about something or other. :P

quite the contrary, this is the best laugh I've had in ages, really funny to see how passionate people get about their machines - quite surreal in fact.

The clear and resounding thing though seems to me to be that mac became the industry standard in the days when it was the best, but the mac users here haven't really managed to convince me that it's still that way today - the reasons given here seem to be quite abstract and not entirely coherent.

Given that I'm on a low budget I've pretty much decided that I'll stick to PC and maybe in the future when I'm better off I'll think about looking into it, but the point of my question was to find out whether it was worth 'finding' the money and making some sacrifices to go to a better platform, but no one here has persuaded me that it would be worth it, if anything the opposite.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and for a really entertaining thread, I'll be more cautious in opening the mac/pac wounds in the future!!

and martyn - your points about microcosm/macrocosm and humans not getting along - I couldn't agree more, all those extra terrestrial life forms which are probably studying us right now must be perplexed and bewildered at this fascinating species which can create incredible things but cant agree on anything. If they have a sense of humour they must be pissing themselves!

I think we'll hang on in there though, providided the americans do their bit for the world and get rid of that evil nutcase they have for president at the moment!!!

As a person about to take the plunge...

This thread is both equal parts deplorable and laughable.
I'm about to sell 9/10'ths of an ever growing hardware studio.
During this process I have decided to keep 1 hardware sequencer (MP-7)and my AW4416 DAW + 2 TC300 Rack units.
The rest is being replaced by Abelton Live , Reason 2.5 ,Reaktor ,FM-7 and Moog Modular V.
The spec test thread made for interesting and intelligent reading.
If I could afford a G5 I'd go Mac in a flash , I cant so I'll be getting a PC with a pair of 10000 rpm Raptor 5ms seek time HardDrives.
Sequencing on my hardware and getting a balance between the two worlds I'm happy with.
At the end of the day is MY CHOICE of computer platform particularly relevent ?
Sadly I cannot get Metasynth & Xx for PC :( nor Cell Synth (and neither support Panther at the moment anyway).
After using hardware since 88' (I started out as a bass player) I would have thought these arguements would/should be dead by now.
It's like the whole ,digital ,versus analog arguement.
Or the why 18 db per octave 3 pole diode filters can't be simulated on a Moog.
Or why a Schaltwerk is better than a Doepfer and heaven forbid you dare touch a MOTM system in some parts of the synth world.
If you get the results you like use it and be happy.
The general JOE BLOGGS - buying public really do not give a rats arse when buying a Cd if you use a PC or Mac , Rompler ,Va ,Softsynth/Sampler ,Marshal Stack or a POD amp simulator.
They only care about the sound of the end product.
At the end of the day the world is full of a lot of unpleasentness.
I have more important things to contemplate than the platform a person uses.
The fact that we've all chosen to use such a great program as LIVE is testament in itself.
In a nutshell the tools are largely arbitrary when placed in the context of end results.
And just as in real life this thread proves one thing.
It doesn't matter if your gay ,straight ,bi ,transgendered ,black ,white ,yellow ,red ,short, fat ,tall ,thin, frail ,sick or infirm. Assholes will always be assholes.
No matter what walk of life ,what Computing platform or what socio- economic bracket.
If ART doesn't imitate life these frorums most definately do.
