Nope, you can't. 8O They are basically for mousing.

What you can do is to midi assign the actual parameters, not from the X/Y pad but from the interface itself (in the case of Live's instruments/effects) or from the default VST interface (unfold with arrow button in left corner above X/Y pad).

Well if you assign for example Cutoff and Resonance to the pad - then you midi map Cutoff and Resonance to whatever CCs on you controller. Done. Exactly like Michael SW said.

If PadKontrol sends CCs for X and Y on the touchpad - then you're all set to go. You don't have to be sad. Only thing is that it doesn't map directly to the XYPad in Live, but rather to the parameters themselves.

as long as whatever X/Y controller you are using (touchpad, stick etc) lets you assign seperate CC #S to both X left/right and Y up/down... you're all set

just assign each one to seperate param's on the device. this is what I did with the Novation SL touchpad .. works like a charm

But I though the midi control facilities in Live were a function of the host and the VST standard and had nothing to do with the plug itself?

Press the midi map button

open VST interface

move a parameter in the VST

move knob/slider/bellybuttontoCCcontroller

your controller is assigned to the VST

what about the little arrow button next to the gui open button in the device rack, if you push that then you'll see a box with little faders that go left to right and you can link any of those to midi. linking supatrigga works fine.
