Grim Reality

Post by anonymouse » Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:30 pm

What is everyone's 'real job' here?

I always suspect that most of us on this forum are addicted hobbyists rather than music 'industry pros'.

To make your main money, if you are employed, post what you do, how long you have been doing it, how much you earn and where you live.

Or if you are unemployed, say it. And say how long you've been unemployed and how much the government pays you.

Or if a student, studying what?

Are there millionaires amongst us, or are you just scraping by?

Interesting to hear how people in different countries are making a living...

sure - I'm a software tester. Basically I get told what a new piece of functionality is meant to do, and I spend a few days trying to break it!

Not quite Sasha, but it pays the bills and isn't too stressful.

I live in Ireland and for my troubles I get paid EUR32,000 a year and I've been doing this for 3 years.

And you knotkranky?

Fair enough, I'm an industry pro audio engineer and 20 year musician. It's always paid my bills somehow. Mainly mixing in my studio in venice CA. lamenting pre 2003 when my rate was triple now. Its feast/famine by all accounts. I get a big joy from putting the pro mix moves on home recordings and watching their jaws drop and eyes well up, though it's a bummer when the check bounces. God how I miss P.O.'s and record companies.

I am a graphic designer — wait I asked this very question like 2 weeks ago and got like 2 responses, oh well — I live in Minneapolis, I make $25,000 a year but I just graduated from college and I was working for free at internship until recently so I guess this is OK for my first gig. However if they don't give me like a 10% raise every 6 months until I'm making something decent I'm outta there.

I'm South African living in London on a student visa. I've doubled up my courses, doing a communication degree as well as web design and development. Because of my student visa I'm legally only allowed to work 20hrs a week, which is nowhere near enough to survive. Doing a bar job that equates to about £90 a week, and my rent alone is £85 a week. I do freelance writing for a financial website and on weekends I ride rickshaws in the west-end, which just about puts some food in my tummy and a couple new tunes off beatport every now and then. Student life is GREAT! Seriously! :D

Accountant in Maine, USA for a paycheck in the low 30k range. I spend more on gear and tunes than I make doing gigs.

soundengineer / producer in my own studio and as a freelancer for mainly electronic music but also accoustic stuff [been doing that since over 20years] and in our days only occasional DJ-ing.

also i do write occasionally music for TV and Cinema commercials.

so most of my live i was surounded from sound and music in the one way or other, and kept my fridge happy.
