Operator DX7 like piano sound
Operator DX7 like piano sound
Hi,
Has anybody succeded in creating/downloading an FM Piano patch closer to DX7 electric pianos?
The demo patches (Rhodesia or EPiano) are not satisfactory for me.
It's Operator capable of that?
Thanks 4 help

How it can be that Operator can't do that ?
I'm new to FM and Operator (only demo for now) I've managed to create some cheesy pads but DX7-like-Piano it's too hard for me.
How can it be that the preset examples does not give you the maxed capabilities of Operator?

Hi,
not a FM professional too, but I can give you a link to an interesting article. It explains how to program the DX7 (and FM synths in general), and the philosophy behind FM. Go and see :
http://www.maths.abdn.ac.uk/~bensondj/d ... grmdx7.pdf
Maybe it'll give some hints on how to obtain the sound you like.
Cheers

The Classic DX7 e-piano sound makes full use of all 6 operators.
Operator only has 4... but it does have more waveforms and a filter, which means you can get sounds that the DX7 can't produce.
Personally I hate that DX7 e-piano - syrupy cheese with extra syrup on it. used on all the worst '80's ballads.

"That very perceptive of you Mr Stapleton, and rather unexpected... in a G Major"
Thanks.
Any downloadable patch might be useful and inspirational.
Maybe I'm too old... I like that DX7 sound , but being modern I like SampleTank Sparkling Piano as well if only it would not freeze when used with Live...
However I feel Operator a little 'cold' in terms of sounding, can it be more cheesy?

Thanks Justin, I thought CovertOperators produce patches for electronic, ambient, techno, which is not what I'm doing, being more 'old style' with jazz/funky and ballads. Do you think they have something that fits in?justin wrote:here is bigger preset lib 4 operator, which has alot more than the standard live presets.

The preset pack contains over 700 presets that were made over the last year.
They are a wide variety of patches going from simple sounds to complex textures and sequences.
There are also a lot of raw sounds in there that can be shaped to your liking.
The pack is nothing more then a friendly invitation to explore the operator
Live 6 opens up a whole new dimension to programming the operator though.
Those sounds have yet to be heard

Due to my sadness with Ableton & SampleTank I'm looking to EIC as the only way to go, maybe coupled with Sampler and some samples bought around.
If Operator or Simpler or Sampler won't work it has to be fixed, it falls in their courtyard... while VST's are not.

ImageLine makes a pretty hot little synth plugin called "Sytrus"...it is an FM synth and all of the DX7 ROMs have been patched and can be uploaded into this synth...I use it as a plugin to Live all the time for FM sounds.

3.2 GHz Windows XP, Live 7, Reason 4, FL Studio 7, Stylus RMX, Sytrus, Toxic III, Novation X-Station 49, Akai MPD24, EMu XK6, Roland MC-303, Gemini BPM5000 Mixer, MBox
Thanks I gave it a go and I will soon experiment with Operator(s):Pmoscom_musik wrote:Hi,

Why not try to build the sound in Electric.
Electric has awesome e-piano sounds.

http://soundcloud.com/umbriel-rising http://www.myspace.com/leedsquietmandemos Live 7.0.18 SUITE, Cubase 5.5.2], Soundforge 9, Dell XPS M1530, 2.2 Ghz C2D, 4GB, Vista Ult SP2, legit plugins a plenty, Alesis IO14.
Here is the data sheet for the original patch. It looks like that algorithm uses 3 carriers, each with their own modulator. One of the modulators feeds back on itself. Maybe you could try to stack two Operator instances both using algorithm 8? I'm not sure because I don't have a DX7... but maybe this is a perfect excuse to buy FM8?
