i always put the mastering chain from the audio effects group on my master that is it.. i compress and EQ everytinging in the set via routed channels of similar sounds etc. Maybe not the correct way , but it works for me - i go a bit crazy on compressors for the drums though i have to say.

Ableton Compressor 1 -> Saturator.

Both set to "Squish me tracks", really aggressively. Yup.
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

on the master channel never anything, level usually between -4 to -6 db.
to leave enough headroom.

then in a separate session whatever the individual track needs.
usually done by someone else (mainly re-form studio, London or chemistry mastering, NY), i am able to do it myself but i want my material going through a seperate set of ears! so i do that only for others.

classic master limiter set to zero, just for avoiding clips.

I like my transients free.
