use an Escrow service like Tripledeal..
if a seller won't go with that you can be sure for 99% that it is a fraud..
1- buyer and seller register at the escrow site
2- an agreement is set up
3- buyer pays the escrow service
4- seller sends package
5- escrow service pays seller

I got stung like that last year ona MIDI retrofit 808. They won the bid, then didn't pay, and emailed (presumeably) all the other bidders saying that the highest bidder didn't pay (true) and would we like to settle it there and then....Krugger wrote:by the way, if an ebay listing contains (approx):
"Do not contact us/me via eBay, you have to mail us/me on [email protected] (usually AOL) - We will NOT reply to any questions sent via eBay"
is a fraud
It's an account which has been hijacked and is being used by someone else to sell an item using the feedback and credibility of a good seller.
I hope you didn't bid on such item!

Yahoo email address and Western Union money transfer - I shoulda seen the signs, it was AU$1500 I'd rather not have lost...
The funny thing is that the day I transferred the money I almost talked myself out of it because I remember what Mr Henke said on his site (ie. who needs another 808 kick drum?)... haha, I shoulda listened to ya
Hi.
Let's have a sellers story here too.
I sold a minidisc recorder to a guy in NY. Shipped from Estonia.
When the thing arrives he is telling me that its not working. I try to find out how it is not working. He sais he knows that it is not working and refuses to elaborate. Wants to return it if I pay postage. I try still get details what is not working. He says that the package was ripped. I ask if he filed damage report. he says it is my responsibility and so on... You get the picture.
After a month of dispute he gets through Paypal buyer protection money refunded. I get no opportunity to respond to paypal. You go through automated messages from paypal for three months after the time limit runs out.
In the end I have no money no the item returned.
Ebay and Paypal are great untill you got a problem. You get no help.
Few years ago I got my money back, when a seller run with my $300 and some others from same time, just because I happened to pay with CitiCard. Paypal offered no assistance.
So you have to be careful and when you take the risk you need to calculate the cost.
I have bought many great items from eBay for few $, but got burnt few times as well. So overall it evens out. I have 177 pos feedback with 1 neg from that minidisk buyer.
I will not buy from germans if they have bank transfer as a only option.
First it is too expensive for me to send money and second there is no quarantees.
For costly items always use escrow or collect in person.

I told you, Germans! Only people i do any Ebay with, because, despite rare exceptions, honesty and decency are still alive here. Very predictable, great for everyday live, less for artistsic but then it saves me time to do my artistic work when everyday routines work like a clock.b0unce wrote:well it arrived..
packaged well etc...
now I'm gonna take it to a secluded place......and do things
and I got the day off too =)
last time I transfer cash like that tho
those 'escrow' services seem like a good way to go.

Due to an investigation into the sale of stolen equipment on eBay to Ireland,
which I am currently carrying out I will unfortunately have to impound your recent instrument purchase
for the forceable future or until the rightful ownership of the equipment can be determined.
There will also be a small storage/insurance fee payable for holding your instrument during this investigation,
this charge must be paid in advance, and the current cost of this is 400 euros.
Please have the instrument and storage/insurance fee (in cash) ready for collection
by one of may agents this afternoon.

i -always- do my ebay browsing on the german one....good stuff and better deals....plus I'm european, so ya...buying in europe is good for me.
just this was the first time I ever paid by bank transfer (785 for the synth, plus another 50 for postage & insurance) ... I was really hasty, never been stung before and was used to using bank transfers with other business' ....but never with a private seller.
ya it worked out, but initially he needed the money fast (like he couldnt wait an extra day for me to put the money through - as a result I had to travel 50km I could have avoided if he just waited an extra day) .....then he's too sick to post by the first weekend, and another week goes by, and then when he does send it the postage messed up.....he was in such a rush to receive but he took his sweet time getting the unit to me...... even tho all the other signs were good (german seller with 100% positive feedback) , thoughts of a hacked account crept into my mind...
even if it wasnt hacked.... if yer not careful even mild-mannered people can rip you off under the right circumstances. especially if yer unknown to them. nice guys get into financial trouble too.
AND there is damage to the unit that he didnt mention...the power input at the back is extruded, but half of it is cracked off completely, so about half of the power-input jack is exposed during use. its just about firmly in place (it wiggles a bit),,,.but any knock or pull on the chord and it will warp/bend/break this metal connecter thing from the synth's power input. which is probably how he broke it in the first place. by the way it was packed, it definatly didnt happen in transit. plus the broken piece wasnt in the parcel...
no biggie....but between rushing me for the dough, taking in excess of two weeks to post (from the day he had the money), and not mentioning this damage.....well he isnt a star seller imo.
other then that tho...the synth is fuckin sweet =)
