eq3 colours sound (even when flat!) - here's a workaround

Post by The Phat Conductor » Tue Sep 12, 2006 6:23 am

ok, i've been doing some tests after reading about the problems with eq3 here: http://www.abletonlivedj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4215

i was a:b ing a track through eq3 vs 2 eq4s (both flat) and eq3 colours the sound, EVEN WHEN IT'S FLAT!!!! yuck!

this post should really be on both boards.

anyway:

if you double up two eq4s using midiyoke, bidule, controlAid or live 6 you can make it so that the same knob controls both eqs and the difference is like night and day. try it and see. it really is a godsend.

booURNS to eq3! never again!

There will be a number of great isolators in the next Covert Operator pack. Some are drastic, some are simply transparent.

I can't begin to describe the beauty of EQ8+racks.

It's..just..that..good!

i don't think anyone was debating that eq3 sounded shit, it's just a bit of a pain to macro map the midi knobs to control two eq4s unless you have ableton 6.

controlAid can do it relatively painlessly though.

I hate eq3. :x

When I started learning to use Live I had version 2. No EQ3. I so wanted EQ3 for DJ'ing. When I finally upgraded and got EQ3 it was like a kick in the nuts. Sounded awful. Thank the lord for EQ4 with one band disabled!

I did. I did. However, if you superimpose 2 or 3 bands of eq8 at the same frequency and set them all to hi-pass or low-pass, you can get some very surgical cutting of frequencies when DJing. It is very impressive. Much cleaner than even most of the DJ mixers I have used.

Yay!!!!!

EQ8 really is quite hot, even if it doesn't have quite the A/B functionality I was hoping for.

with midi yoke you can control multiple midi tracks with one midi source.

send out to midi yoke with track 1, and tracks 2, 3, 4 etc can listen to the same midi yoke input. there's a lot you can do by making a midi clip that sends commands back into Live.

midi yoke is lots of fun to play with and free to download.

I don't think you can use midi yoke to have 1 knob control multiple knobs in FX/vsts/etc. you need a program like bomes, reaktor, max/msp some kind of translator and real time midi tool. I haven't used those.

In Live 6 you can assign 1 knob to a bunch of controls. 1 knob can control bpm, quantise, scene launch, groove, an EQ filter freq, a delay setting etc in one movement, i you were insane enough to go there.

What is ControlAid? Is this another program? How do you use it with Ableton + EQ4?
