OT: Firewire 410 and Mac OSX 10.4.7 (Mac Pro)
There were updates to 10.4.7 for MacPro, so I doubt it would workOliQ wrote:What happens if you get a new Mac with 10.4.7 installs, can you revert it to 10.4.6 using the download for 10.4.6 on the Apple site? Will a FW410 work then?
I'm new to Macs, Windows would never allow you to go back to a previous OS version like that...
I don't think anyone recommends disconnecting Firewire hardware when running, since it's interfaced to the rest of the hardware differently than something like USB, it'd be more like pulling out a hard drive...boraxx wrote:well u know what sucks about the 410. that u cant unplugg / plugg it without rebooting. or has this changed with new driver releases? do other Firewire interfaces sport the same issue? anyone?
The FW410 support from M-Audio sucks. When I first reported their driver didn't work, they sent me a message (days later) "reinstall the driver", I reported that didn't work. Then I sent another message, the response was "reinstall the driver". Then I sent a message asking if they'd even read my message. They responded the next week "reinstall the driver".
They suck, they suck, they suck.
yep, m-audio make shit drivers and their support is hopeless.
however, i had a problem with FW410 a while ago which might be of help.
i used it to mix a surround sound project, and all went well.
later i got back to my studio, plugged in my midi sport USB 2x2 device and i couldnt see it on the list of devices!
to cut a long story short, what i had to do was to run the FW410 driver installer and select uninstall from there. then i had to dl the latest version of the driver and re-install. after that, my midi sport 2x2 usb started working again. a frustrating experience because i had to figure this out myself, their support team didnt answer my question until 2/3 weeks later - by which time i had fixed it already.
so the critical thing for me was to use the m-audio driver installer to uninstall, rather than going into system folder and removing files manually.
i also had quite a few problems with the FW410 and midi timing - so in the end, i wouldnt recommend their hardware. it's not that they make shit gear, but they do make crappy drivers with dumb support. which is worrying for a company which is owned by avid / pro tools...
may the force be with you.

I tried the uninstall/reinstall repair permissions thing from every possible direction. At the heart of the problem is the fact that M-Audio doesn't use the CoreAudio system, they have their own driver/control panel for Macs, which always lags behind mac updates. Their programmers seem to be
fairly well "held back" for lack of a more polite expression. Just the inane responses, like the one I got after asking if they'd even read my message are not only infuriating, but show you the regard M-Audio have for their customers.

I plug and unplug my 410 from my iBook all the time with no trouble. I always put the iBook to sleep first, though. Very rarely do I need to reboot.boraxx wrote:well u know what sucks about the 410. that u cant unplugg / plugg it without rebooting. or has this changed with new driver releases? do other Firewire interfaces sport the same issue? anyone?
I'm on a ppc mac, so no driver trouble, but I can attest that M-Audio's tech support truly sucks.
