I use the M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI card with external A/D/A rack module. It's definitely the most amazing sound card I've ever seen. I got it and Cubase SX for $900 in a bundle. Well worth the money. Probably more than you need if you are doing everything with software, though. I have a mixer with 4 submix outputs, though, and with all my external gear, it's great. No problems at all, and I use XP.

with firewire/USB 2.0 interfaces I would seriously ponder external audio-hardware: you always can hook those to your future (apple-) notebook

I've seen the RME crash a friend's TiBook so often and brutally it's unbelievable... but we're talking about PC here, so he may be OK

there are definitely peeps on mac using RME and Live with no problems (Monolake for one, I believe), but yes I've heard of OSX and RME problems, but then again I've heard of problems with different versions of OSX and just about anything. I've yet to hear of a single RME on pc problem ever.

For portability matched with loads of ins n' outs, the Quatafire (it's even smaller than the Delta 410!!!)

For performance (where portability isn't an issue), I like M-Audio and MOTU. I currently use a MOTU 828 (the original one) and I like it a lot - but I would prefer a MKII!

I am using the RME DIGI96/8 PAD with XP and it is fantastic. Not for laptops, but RME is smoking.

for laptops, as per previous suggestions, the fastest and best sounding card (better and faster than 828) is the RME multiface
