MIDI sync in Live sucks!!!

Post by BENJ-AMG » Wed Mar 03, 2004 7:21 pm

When I connect my MPC via my Tascam US-122 to sync with Live 2, there is a noticable clock issue where the MPC will lose sync. I'm also using the MIDI in on the Tascam to run my Radium 61 and when a knob, key, slider is active, it REALLY throws things off. Whats odd is that I can use this exact same hardware setup with Nuendo and it is faultless. Whats the point of having MIDI sync in Live if it works like trash? Help me feel stupid. Gimme a solution.

Midi-sync in live does suck. solution. don't use Live as the master. Your hardware will have stable sync and Live works fine as a slave in sync mode.
The best, best songs are utterly forgettable.

I can't. My MIDI in has to be open so I can use my Radium. The Tascam MIDI interface only has 1 in and 1 out.

Try syncing it to another piece of MIDI hardware. I bet it's a let down.

i'm doing Live to Live via 2 mt4s on 2 powerbook laptops, and sporadically the slave Mac just can't see any sync information, i can reboot mess about with it whatver, then suddenly, out of the blue, after ages of messing, it will just come back on.. very frustrating..

Ableton should implement OSC sync into Live, its open source, cross platform, and works over a network (ie a single cross over ethernet cable), much better than darn midi boxes and darn midi leads..

In my band we have 1 laptop with Live running as the master clock, this is then fed into a Motu Midi Timepiece and distributed to a drum machine (for our drummer to play to) an Rs7000 sequencer, Another Laptop with Live, and an Electrix repeater...

Before we got the Motu Midi Timepiece syncing was a pain, we were daisy chaining everything and it seemed like the further down the chain a device was the more out of sync it would get...

Also, its key to hook everthing up and THEN start live (all hardware will get goin from the start event and sync up on the beat rather than just insync from where you tell the hardware to start)

ie: if the drum machine doesnt recieve the start message from live and the drummer starts it later, it will be in sync in that its beats fall in the same place everytime our loops repeat, but the downbeats wont nessesarily be in the same place.

Well I wish there was a feasible workaround. I have had to rethink 3 weeks work in a matter of days now because I procrastinated. Should have hooked up the MPC a long time ago to make sure it was gonna jive. Now I guess we will be using Nuendo and some programmed sequences. Not as much fun as totally improving a planned out set but at least we can do our show Friday. Crappy Ableton MIDI sync....

Nope. Working fine. In fact it works one hell of a lot better than virtually any other software I have used as a slave via MIDI Sync.

Try having Sync on its own port without other crap causing jitter to the clock such as controller/note/whatever data. MIDI Sync needs its own port and seperating from other data. that puts the clock data out of whack if on the same line. Which is quite obvious really.

OPther than that, nope works absolutely fine within a pretty complex setup here.

Hey nobby, just to say thanks, lovin' your crew's tracks here in Tokyo, I play them out all the time. I switched so many people onto the Halloween/horror one hahaha, still using the 'acappella' in mixes too.
Nice!
