go with Sampler first, then Operator later.. there are tons of free synths for Windows that have FM capabilities to hold you over, but how many free multisamplers with resynthesis engines?

Operator or Sampler? Given the choice, I'd go with Sampler, although it is mroe expensive, no?
Given a greater amount of choice, I'd do this:
Get Zebra 2 for your synth. ($169) (It'll cost you a little more than Operator.)
Or get Kontakt 2 for your sampler (which will cost more).
Let's see. You could upgrade to 6 (download version only). That would cost you just over $100+ $350 for Kontakt 2= $450.
Or you could buy the boxed version of Live 6 $200 and buy sampler for another $200. That would cost you $400.
For $50 more you get a better sampler and library with Kontakt 2 that can be used in other programs. You definitely won't need the boxed version with all of the instruments if you have Kontakt 2.

If I had to choose, I would go for Sampler. I find Operator hella fun, but you can do some interesting single oscilator FM stuff in Sampler too.

Look at it this way;

Operator does one thing better than almost anybody else (FM synthesis) and one thing very well indeed (subtractive synthesis).

Sampler does a bijillion things well. Much more flexible.

The decision is whether you want a specialized piece or a highly competent generalist - and that will depend on the VSTs that you have right now.

The biggest advantage of Sampler for me is that you can map the Pitch Bend, aftertouch, mod wheel etc internally to the instrument. Very nice for dropping in a preset and having your most important parameters pre-midi-mapped.

Or, you could buy Reason :)

however...

You may want to spend the extra money and get both

but...

If you can only get 1, get the Sampler

peace

I know it's hard, especially when you've got your mind made up to buy something but...

you may want to spend a couple more minutes than you have with REASON and see where it takes you. You might be surprised

Funny question, Sampler or Operator, but one which I am also facing.

There is a guy here in Dublin selling his licence for both.

Ill probably buy them both, but personally if I had to buy one first, it would be Operator (I already own Kontakt). I sometimes run it in demo mode and every time, I come up with lovely useable patches.

What I am curious about is Sampler vs Kontakt. I would be seriously tempted by Sampler because it loads so quickly compared to Kontakt, but the doubling up of patches (import to library) slightly annoys me.

Does anyone have any opinions on Sampler vs Kontakt?

I like to do house/techno/dance/etc. and have Reason, Stylus RMX, and ImageLine's Sytrus VST synth

Should I go with Sampler or Operator?
You use also reason 3 right?
Then don't get any of those.Just use reason synths and sampler and rewire reason with Live.
