Ableton is great, but it seems to take the skill out of DJ'ing. Actually, the term "DJ" doesn't even apply anymore since it originated from "disc jockey."

Mixing pre-matched loops and beats is cheating in my opinion!

Also, the Stanton Str-80's are actually nice tables. They are my backups, in case my Vestax decks should ever take a shit on me.

This is off the subject, but I say fuck 1200's. They are outdated, and there's turntables out there that are simply better. Opinions?

Well I guess I will not call myself a DJ then. I will call myself a laptop musician. Dont want to piss the purist off. IMO live takes as much skill and creativity to get people moving. Also the type of music I will be playing is Dancehall and Roots Reggae and Dub. Now anyone who has been to a Dancehall gig knows that this is no easy feat, no one gives a shit whether you are using turntables or a laptop. People want to dance and hear you buss big tunes period. I played around doing this in live at the results have been great. Hell I can crank out hard tunes., trigger horns, sirens and all the effects I need to my heart desire. Spin on turntables all you want. Your the Real DJ we laptop users are a bunch of talentless people. Thanks for the feed back too.

Actually I do both, homie.

I'm just sayin' that if there ever comes a day that laptop DJ's replace real DJ's, it will be a sad, sad day.

i started at the age of 18. i was doing a radio show at that time and
did a lot of band interviews in a certain club. someday the club owner
needed a new dj and thought "he is doing a radio show so he can dj.".
and that´s how i made my first money as a dj...

before i had only played on parties of my school class. but i think you
can´t even call that djing...

but before that i already "produced" my own "mixes". i had that
double tape deck and cut short song parts together using record-pause.

i should have a look if i can still find one of those tapes.
could earn me LOTS of respect if you hear them

I use Ableton and produce as well and I gotta say that I have no respect for laptop DJ's! (serato excluded, lol)
I had to find music in the Australian countryside in the early 90's
so i can understand the impact of the internet too... amen.

I love Serato and LIVE
and i respect anyone who rocks a crowd with or without flares, crabs or beatmixing.

But I think of LIVE/Laptop DJ's more as Live p.a's than as traditional DJ's

Either way, if you say youre a DJ then thats what you are... respect or no respect.

Peace and mungbeans baby

Bought my first record when I was 21 got my first gig when I was 22 threw a mega rave for my 25th birthday - put out my first record when I was 28 now I'm 31

things go pretty slow round here...

why'd I start? I had a girlfriend who dj'd and while she was at school I'd pretend i was donald in my underwear and play BASSBIN TWIN records - that got old quick...

...after I dumped her and moved to Seattle I went to CONCEPTS RECORD store and bought a PAUL JOHNSON RECORD --->

started "officially" djing in april 1995 when i was 23 on garage sale turntables. got started because i am physically and mentally unable to just be a spectator in anything i really dig.

kept doing it. still doing it. don't really get paid shit, but i love djing and hearing good tunes on big speakers. really, what other reason is there to do it?

and i spin vinyl (sometimes with serato scratch) for techno and use ableton for dubstep sets.

anyone who wants to step when i use ableton and tell me i am not a "REAL" dj, can then step up to the turntables and watch me wipe the floor with their ass.
but then, i really don't have to prove that i am a "REAL" dj after almost 12 fuckin' years on the decks. so maybe i would just laugh at them and continue to rock the dancefloor. meh.

that is all.

Word, a tool is a bloodklaat tool. I am sick of people with this purist mentality. Fuck your not a producers then if you use ableton live. You should go into an analog studio, use real live instruments, analog gear etc. Before you can call yourself a producer.

19 I had a neighbor who lived next door to me after watching him a few times he offerd to show me the ways. Started with two 1200 with a allen and heath 3 ch mixer. Now I have two CD players Dennon. Now I am more of a father than a club DJ. I have a little girl who is about to turn 4 and a son who is three weeks old. So now all the equipments is in the basement me and Trinity the four year old go down about 4 times a week to spin( mostly Disney stuff for here with some breakbeat thrown in for me) and now with live we mix and record her on the mic. You are never to old to create. Blaze

I started 6 1/2 years ago. I was always into different types of electronic music, and two of my home boys that I met during the period I was trying to get clean and finally got clean were ex-ravers and were also spinning records. I thought it was cool but really had no inclination to get into it.

When I had 6 months clean one of my home boys I mentioned above died of a heroin overdose. He had become one of my closest friends and it really messed me up. His Mom thought he would want me to have his stuff so she gave me his decks and mixer. So, I carried on for him and found that I really enjoy it.

It was one of those Numark starter kits. I bought 1200's not long after, but I still have those decks and mixer stored away. For me it's all about my love of music and sharing that with people, also it's about love for Josh and all my other friends that didn't make it.

That sounds just like what people used to say, and some still say, about DJs!!!! "The day a DJ replaces a real musician will be a sad day!"

If someone uses Ableton to just run tracks together, like a boring dj, then yeah, thats extra boring. But Ableton means there's no excuse for that boring crap!

I just started DJing a year ago...I did all Live PA style with Live before...Live PA and production for the Live PA. I started DJing because its a lot more fun for me live, it takes less prep and sounds better, and it frees me up to do AV triggering. Basically its a hell of a lot easier to DJ than to do Live PA properly. Even with using multi-band sidechain compressors, multi-band crossfaders, gates, and dummy clips, DJing is getting hella boring though...I can't wait to get the Live PA to a point I'm happy with it.....until then I'll keep DJing live and producing at home. If someone wants to talk about being a "real" musician I can play guitar, bass, piano, drums, sing, and I have a degree in classical guitar. Haven't learned to use the decks yet, though....
