When I start Live with my midi controller off and go to midi settings in Live, Live remembers the controller, but both in and out ports are set to none and greyed out. When I put the controller on, they become active (which is normal), but they stay at none.
Is it possible, that Live could maintain these settings and grey them out while remembering them. Then, when the controller is back online, Live could check for the ports and set them to none, if they don't exist, BUT keep them with the previous settings, if they DO exist.
Now I have to set them each time I start Live with my controller off.

I don't think there is a way of doing that. I think that's just the nature of having things turned on/off in the software world.
something similar happens when Live (or any other app) doesn't find the last audio interface it used and it automatically turns the engine off until you manually choose a new interface. this also affects your previous audio routings and ins/outs.
this is just something we all have to live with (but hopefully someone can prove me wrong and show the way

But it does remember the device. Why can't it remember the ports that were assigned to the device but sets them to none? I mean, the device isn't connected either, so why does it remember the device but not the ports involved?

bump...
When I start Live with my MIDI controller off and go to MIDI settings, the midi controller's name is still there, even though it's greyed out. It becomes visible when I put the controller on.
Why can't this work for the ports on the same controller too? Even though the controller's name is there greyed out, IN and OUT port are reset to none and greyed out. It would be so handy, if they were there too so I wouldn't have to set them every time I forget to put my controller on when starting Live.
