any recording pros? redcording Vibes

Post by stjohn » Thu Jan 04, 2007 10:32 pm

hi all...

im going to be recording a set of Vibes this weekend, in thinking of going with a normal stereo space mic setup, with maybe a mid - side too just to experiment.

im just wondering if anyone has experience in this?

If you are indeed talking about a vibraphone the trick is to get the right balance of mallet-on-metal sound and the tube+vibration sound.

in other words, I'd go for a stereo-on-top-plus-stereo-below solution. Or simply work a lot with height while trying to find a good balance.

cheers machinate... that sounds good alright... i dont have much studio time so its going to be close... and i want to get everything right before the musican gets there...

so u reckon getting 2 on top would capture the mallet ok?

record it from above, catch the sound bouncing off the floor, they're too large to record section by section... advice a vibes player once told me.

Listen to the record "Everywhere and right here" by The Six Parts Seven. They used a vibraphone all over that record and it sounds amazing! One of my favorite records of the last couple of years...

A coincident stereo pair. If the artist isn't all over the vibes then you can move in a little closer for pad like stuff. If it's a featured sound. Consider two stereo pairs if you have the tracks. One overhead and the other getting some room vibe. Crush the shit out of the room and sneek it into the close mics.
