Ultralite is definitely good. Nice sound, no problems, unnecessary number of ins and outs (in a good "I have room for expansion" way). Get one, I don't think you will regret it. Good latency too. It is much much better than my Mackie Spike I had previously, which was not bad, but died after less than a year, which is why I upgraded to MOTU Ultralite, which redefined my notion of "good preamps"!

I havnt heard an ultralight, but the sound coming out of my new ff400 is razor sharp.... Me thinks its worth the extra for top class convertors.

if it is solid or not.

But don't blame me for disliking chinese crap,

Have you ever tried any m-audio interface??? if you do, you will be just like me.
the case is like a tank.. build for on the road..
latency is great..
only minor point I can think of is that the knobs are a bit hard to handle..
too close to each other..

have I ever tried something m-audio?
where do you think I'am coming from?
hehehe.. never again..

This looks like a really solid unit!

Could anyone confirm if it can PLAY BACK (2,000Hz, 8bit PCM) .wav files or (8,000Hz 4bit IMA ADPCM) .wav files?

Alot of professional I/Os will not play back extremely low bit and sample rate files, and its a big concern of mine that whatever I use CAN do so...
Only I/Os I know that can playback these sample and bit rates are the Presonus, RME and Lnyx Audio units. I'll be in the market for a new I/O shortly and this would be excellent info to know. :)

i bought one a while ago, had a few issues with random noise when switching programs (never during any serious work, just when alt-tabbing in windows for example).

liked it enough to buy another one :) lots of inputs and outputs, sounds decent too = recommended interface

i dont think it does, don't quote me on it but i had trouble playing back some real lo-fi files. not sure if they were corrupt however...

so, if you can yousendit one or two samples, i can test them for you...

another happy motu user. have had the ultralite since it's introduction and 0 problems. great sound. I liked it so much I bought the 8 pre by motu also and it too is a solid piece of gear. I have a m- audio ozonic and have had plenty of problems with it . i'm through with m-audio also. enjoy your purchase. Rand

so far my ultralite has performed flawlessy as a soundcard - excellent preamps, incredible definition and detail, solid playback...

however, i have been experiencing issues when copying files via the firewire bus (even when i'm not using the ultralite as a soundcard): halfway through a transfer, the entire firewire bus disappears and i have to reset everything. i'm working with motu support to resolve the issue and i'm sure it will be sorted out soon...

i know this isn't an isolated issue as glitchrock-buddha had posted some similar troubles with his unit. at any rate, until the issue is resolved, the ultralite is still an amazing soundcard for the money - just use caution when daisy-chaining it to other firewire devices...

Is it even meant for that? I assumed the firewire port was just for daisy chaining and extra unit...

the dual firewire ports are meant to allow daisy-chaining *any* other firewire device along the same bus - this is standard with almost all firewire soundcards.

I opened the files in Soundforge and tried to play them through my Motu 828MK2.

It didn't work so I doubt it would work with the Ultralite
