I've ran into this problem a while back, and beat my head against the wall. Then I found an answer in a completely different problem I was having. Maybe you are experiencing the same issues.
Do a search on your system for the following file: mp3PRO.dll
If you have installed Nero CD/DVD burning software, it uses this file to decode mp3 when you burn audio CDs. But there was a known bug when they released Nero v7.0, the version of mp3PRO.dll which it installs doesn't work.
Locate the mp3PRO.dll file and check the version (right-click/properties...select the version tab). If it is newer than version 2.0.4.7 (aka a larger number), this may be causing the problem.
From what I was able to determine, this file registers itself directly with the operating system as the default MP3 decoder when installed. When a newer version of this file was installed, Live would freeze as soon as I did anything with MP3s. As soon as I downgraded the mp3PRO to version 2.0.4.7, I was back in business (for both Nero and Live).
Do a search on-line for "mp3PRO.dll", and you should be able to find an older version.
