side chaining

Post by Aamos » Fri Apr 27, 2007 5:58 am

hey guys. what is the standard with side chaining. i understand it now. and it is. cool. but when i listnen to a song i was wandering....do they use just two tracks to get the effect of ducking. one the pad and one the beat.or do they route more tracks into the side chain. thank'sssss.

i'm also new to sidechaining but as far as i know the most common use of it is to route the kick to the bass track (with a sidechain compressor on it) to avoid crossing of frequencies in the same range.
so to answer your question just one track should be routed.
but i'm really not the reference on this matter...

Sidechaining works by changing what the device is "listening" for, when determining if it should work or not.

So, if you've got a compressor on a track, normally the compressor is listening to the audio passing through it to see if it should activate or not. If it's sidechained, it's going to completely ignore what's passing through it, and instead, rely solely on what's being sidechained, and it will act upon that signal instead of the original.

You can sidechain a number of ways, but usually it's a split signal off of what you want to affect. So, say if you want the kick to control the bass, you'd split the kick signal, either by duping the track and routing it, splitting it (like in Reason), or patching in off the multitrack return (if you're on a console).

i cant really get sidechaining nailed in ableton live; working with sends etc introduces big delays that throw it out of wack. strange

side-chaining

you cannot side-chain in live because its compressors have no input, there are some great third party plug-ins now that you can buy or get for free.
you should give these a try when you finally get the hang of the 'what to side chain' part

Personally i use gup-1 side-chain compressor, works pefectly in Live and good tutorial book with software teaching you how to use it. Give it a go if you get chance [/b]
