depends what you're after too. Audacity is a free audio editor, and there are heaps of free vst's out there as well.

Another path you could consider is looking at how you would run linux apps on a mac, which you can, with the combination of X11 (comes with every mac on the disc) and/or Fink (look into fink before you jump in, but it looks like a cool idea)
iMac 2.16GHz, MacBookPro 2.4GHz, OS10.5.4, Logic Studio, Live6.0.10, Reason4, Presonus Firebox, EvoMK429c, BehringerUMX25, Korg PadKontrol, NovationRemoteSL0.

try the triple cheese, it's not listed at kvr in the audio unit /instrument section. i had some troubles when using the alphakanal stuff, especially with the automat synth. after copy/paste of clips live changes the every osc-coarse tune to max.

The problem with a lot of pluggo jr. plugins is they make noise at you to remind you they're not registered... but for $100 you get like 50 plugins from them. But that's not what you were asking for! Anyway...

For a free audio editor, you can get Audacity. It's open source and does the barebones of audio editing.

On free VST's, there's not many that I've fond - usually VST's are more windows specific and a lot of bedroom developers make them for windows and stop there, as developing for mac can be harder (which I'm not into of course, I use mac). There is Crystal by Greenoak software - greenoak.com; it makes some nice sounds.. There's the soundfontsynth from Andy's OSX music - just google that one - it does real audio sampling I believe (it has piano samples, and some others). There's the Alphakanal Automat, which makes some good sine waves and the like, Synapse Hydra which is a three oscillator modular synth that does some very nice sounds, and finally if I may plug the company I work with, there's KeyToSound's Remedy, which is free and Universal Binary and in AU/VST/RTAS, has two oscillators and can make some serious sounds. We just had a contest to see what users could do using it and just it to make an entire song, and I was blown away at all the sounds that came out of this synth. Get it at http://www.keytosound.com .

I'll post more if I think of them. There is also the possibility of using a VST wrapper like FXpansion's wrapper to turn some windows VST's into Mac VST's, but as far as I know, it only wraps VST 2.4, which many VST's are not written for. Beyond that, VST wrapping can be a pain, and not always the safest bet in a live situation.

That's a lot of info... lemme know if you need more!
