A Name for DJing with Ableton.....
A Name for DJing with Ableton.....
Guys
Do any of you get this? I seem to be spending a lot of time explaining to people what I do when I'm using Live to perform. The response I get comes under 2 main categories I guess.....
1) 'It's not proper DJing, You're cheating, the software does it all for you etc etc' or
2) 'Uh?'
I personally don't like the term 'DJ'. So I'm trying to come up with the something that sounds cool and explains what we do when the PC (or MAC ) comes up and the lights go down. I quite liked the term 'knob jockey', but I realised it was aimed as an insult to my sexuality than a compliment to my mixing skills!
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Stevie

F'em! If they want to drag out vinyl and dubplates and a pair of 12's themselves, let them. Ableton and the laptop is just another set of tools of the trade. Big whoop!
Digital DJ or Laptop DJ is probably most appropriate. Don't worry what those turds say.... screw em. If Ableton is your thing, then let it be your thing.
Unfortunately, you can't play all the music out that one might want to play out if you were just reliant on vinyl. Bottom line. You would have to take the laborious task of getting acetates created for every single track you couldn't find on vinyl. Or burn everything on CD also. And you're just eliminating one step. Why throw all your trax on another recording medium when their just on your laptop's hardrive in the first place? It makes no sense.
I think we're now so far into "the future", that up on stage, without a laptop, you're looking kinda weak. A few years ago I felt you were a pussy if you were using a laptop for PA or to DJ. Now it's the other way around. You pretty much kinda look like a dried up old turd if you DON'T have one.
It's funny how the passing of time works.

Totally agree. Tell the vinyl purists to pull their heads out of their asses, it's 2007 already ya heard?Pantytec wrote:

Seriously, when one of them tells you it's not "proper Ding" ask them just exactly what proper Djing is. After they've told you whatever it is they believe it is, if they even have anything to say, tell them "Oh really? All this time I thought it was about the music, the people, and the party."
Tell them what you do is called Djing, and what they are doing is hating. Fuck the haters and fuck the delivery method, you're there to rock the party ya know?
I've been Djing for a little while now, and I don't use Ableton at all (for Djing). Serato, Vinyl and 2 1200's for me, but to each their own right? I personally don't care how a cat's throwin down, just so long as he's throwin down.
Tell them Dj's need to realize IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THE DJ.
