phat kick drums/bass

Ok, does anyone know how to create drum loops containing those gorgeous, thick, low, loud kicks like you hear, you know, everywhere in hip-hop and techno music, but that I can't seem to create no matter how may effects I use?

I pull up Impulse and throw in any of the samples that exist in Live's demo version (I don't think I have EIC), and the best I can get is a treble-y smacking sound.

Any advice on creating heavy, crisp kick hits? (I'm calling it kick because that's what the device calls it but I mean the equivalent of a hit on the bass drum.)

Use something else than Live's samples. Vengeance's sample cds should have sufficient content. Add some eq and slight distortion and BAM!

Why don't you take the beats from the tunes you like and load them into impulse, i some times do it if i'm looking for a certain sounding kick or snare

I assume to do that I'd need to pull a sample with only drum, not vocals/instruments etc? I wanted to snag a sample from a Lauryn Hill song but couldn't find any clean drums, alas.

yeah far point, i tend to use this technique with dance music and it works pretty well.
you should try it anyway you may get good results, if you get something in with it that ya don't wont you could maybe try and filter it out with EQ

If you punch "808 kick wav" into snare I'm sure you'll find some good results

Yes, I was thinking the sound I wanted was like the 808 machine. But what is snare? A loop library I assume?

I make my own. Sine wave, pitch envelope, amp envelope, LOADS of compression and EQ, then usually layer it up with a live kick and compress and EQ some more.

1. Use less effects

2. Layer layer layer.

(i.e. copy and paste midi track to multiple Imuple's or whatever.
Have one a punchy kick, another a deep sub-bass kick drum you can barely hear. Add compression only to this lower kick, leave the punchy track punchy.
Maybe use a real kick drum sample, and then an 808-kick sample? Just dont use one kick as your be-all-end-all and then try to fix it with FX.)

3. Give kicks their own track. Dony try to make that perfect kick by EQing and compressing a drum loop.

4. Give the kick space in the track. Delete excess bassline notes (if the bassline is loud) or use a quiet bass sound to accent the kick, side-chain compress the bass, EQ the bass and kick differently, etc...

5. Did I mention LAYER?

OK - easy with external hardware - have you come across a side chain capable compressor that works within Live?

BTW - using some gentle distortion/saturation and BP filtering helps too. Can use LP too, but you tend to just end up with lots of low end mud that will need to be low cut eventually...

Other alternative - use something liie audacity to get chop up the bits of various kicks and blend them - attack, tail etc...
