Manually Assigning Midi?

Post by 5inusoid » Wed Aug 01, 2007 1:26 pm

How do I MANUALLY assign midi parameters? I just got a used Kaos pad, and its impossible to 'learn' both x + y without accidently moving both at once. Ive gone through everything in the manual, and I can't figure out how to manually assign midi cc. Is there no way?

if you know what midi cc#'s and midi channels the kaoss pad sends on, then yes, you can do this. live actually ignores which input the assignment comes from and only refers to the cc's and channel.

one way you can get around this is to create a midi track and use IAC (on mac) or something like midiyoke (on pc) to route the tracks output to a remote enabled live midi input. then create a midi clip on that track and setup a cc envelope for the first of the two cc's the kaoss pad uses. make sure that the tracks output channel is the same as the one the kaoss pad uses and then set the clip running. switch to midi assignment mode and assign it to whatever you want. then repeat this using the other cc and your in business...

obviously not something you can do on the fly but if it's a static assignment your in luck. otherwise maybe look at using user scripts and automap and setting macro controls?

You do lots of cool things with automapping and a kaoss pad. No need for scripting either. Automatically controlling up to 4-5 rack paramters is easy. Serach the tips & tricks forum for a long post by me about that.

I do this on the padkontrol by the following procedure (which makes use of the fact that the pad information is always transmitted in the order x y):
(a) make sure I know what midi cc # x and y are currently set to
(b) Midi learn the xy pad to whatever you want to be x
(c) go into the padkontrol's setup and reverse the cc #s for x and y
(d) now midi learn what you want to be y.

Bit awkward but easy enough to do once you've done it a few times. Hopefully this can be transferred to work with the kaos pad too, it makes use partly of the fact that the padkontrol's setup mode is very easy to access.
