+1 for Ace of Spades by Motorhead.

The first gig I ever went to was on Motorhead's Iron Fist tour, I couldn't hear properly for several days afterwards, it was nuts! Saw them another 3 times in various years and was never disappointed by their attention to volume. that's something really lacking from todays music i feel, even the festivals have been getting progressively quiter over the years.

Trawling around youtube turned up this really early footage of Deep Purple doing Highway Star before machine Head was released.

Thanx for starting these threads Smutek, they've set me on a real nostalgic one. :D

8) Heh.

There's nothing wrong with my hearing except for a bit of surfers ear, and the damage 10 years of working in various precision engineering plants did. Festivals having to toe the line with local councils is what does the most damage to festival PA systems.

Check out this wikipedia entry on Phil Taylor aka Philthy Animal drummer for motorhead
Shortly after recording 1980's classic Ace of Spades album, Taylor broke his neck after being lifted above the head of a friend in a test of strength, only to be dropped upon his head. Taylor continued to play in Motörhead with the aid of a neck brace, as is visible in the music video for "Ace of Spades". As a result, Taylor now has a prominent lump located on the back of his neck (affectionately referred to as his "knob"), thought to be a calcium deposit caused by his previous spinal trauma. Tour-disrupting injuries were not unfamiliar to Taylor at the time, as he had previously broken his hand whilst punching a man outside of his flat in London. In typical uncompromising Motörhead style, Taylor continued to drum by duct-taping his drum stick into his hand until it had sufficiently healed.
