Vista to buy or not to buy

Post by swiffy » Wed Sep 19, 2007 12:21 am

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on Vista. I'm looking to upgrade my PC set-up. I can't find any new computers that have XP. So now I'm stuck with xp and running programs on my laptop. Which is fine... I realized using a laptop that desktops would be better for me. I'm doing research to make sure that my software and midi controllers are compatible with Vista. My axiom 61 key is. My interface isn't...Lexicon Alpha. How much ram would you need to have to use vista with your audio programs? 3 Gb's good? Maybe I'll just continue to use my laptop, with xp, until they fix the kinks with Vista. Opinions? Thanks!!

why would you consider Vista an upgrade?

it's more like trying an experimental seat belt on a rollercoaster. if it ain't broke then don't fuck with it.

unless you're on of those guys that likes to play with operating systems, then I'd suggest you unplug your computer, get very drunk and talk to random girls ASAP.

Tone-My laptop I feel is just going to die soon. So I guess Vista would be a bad move?

it's totally up to you. I'm a techie kind of guy but I HATE messing around
with computers and OSs, other people like that stuff. Live and stuff run
GREAT on my XP Pro laptop, the last thing I'd want to do is spend time
bug hunting, installing service packs and all that.

I guess I don't see any real advantage to trying Vista except for checking out
the new bling.

glad to confuse you anytime!

the other thing I've read (and I didn't check your links) is that PC mfgs.
aren't offering XP as an option anymore, you can beg and sometimes get it
but they're pushing people towards Vista.

Vista works great hear. I was a long time XP user but recently purchased a Dell Precision 690 Quad Core (Woodcrest) Xeon and it includes both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I'm using 32-bit because some drivers aren't 64-bit ready, but it's no big deal. Personally, I think Vista blows the pants off of XP. I could never go back. Aero is smooth and the overall flow of Vista is great. All those who are buying new machines pre-loaded with Vista should know that Vista is a step up, not down. The same thing happened with XP five years ago. Everyone was afraid and stuck with Windows 2000 or Windows ME. Can you imagine?

I have no issues with Live or VST/VSTi plugins. Just make sure your hardware drivers are compatible. BTW, ASIO4ALL works great in Vista with my crappy built in Sigmatel soundcard. ASIO buffer at 128 all the time, no issues. I plan to get either an EMU 1616M or RME PCIe card, just because I've always felt PCI based audio cards can go a bit further than firewire or USB.

I'm sticking with XP until it truly is obsolete and no longer supported and by that time Vista MIGHT be stable and have reasonable 3rd party driver support optimized for it.
