Please help with my Abelton Live set up!

Post by depakote » Tue Jul 13, 2004 8:03 am

I just purchased a Tascam US-428 USB DAW Controller and will soon own Ableton Live and need help setting up Serato Scratch Live and a Midi Keyboard on a Powermac G5 computer. Will I need to run the line out from my dj mixer to the line inputs on the DAW controller or can I just interface through the USB from Scratch Live? Do I need to run the in/out midi cables to the controller or can I interface through the USB on the keyboard? I am using powered speakers from the interface so is there any reason to use the digital in/out on the DAW controller to the computer? So to break it down I'm just trying to figure out if I need to run everything into my DAW Controller via the inputs then into the computer or if the devices will just run through the USB. Either way I want to use my DAW controller to control Ableton. Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

i have never used serato scratch so i don t know whats the best setting but i can tell you that you better use the keyboard via midi not usb.i had problems running a usb keyboard with the us 428.it creates too many conflicts.
the digital out is good if you want to record to a dat, minidisk or cd recorder.

Thanks for taking your time to respond, I really appreciate it! How well did the Tascam US-428 work with Live for you? I'm new to this and can't find any info about interfacing the two with each other. Would there be a reason to run the digital out from my computer to the Tascam controller? Thanks again!

I also use the 428, but I use a usb midi controller as well, in Panther on a G5. I hardly have any problems, even when I'm hot-swapping a lot.

But the midi ports on the 428 are also pretty grand. :)

I don't see why you'd want to do that. You'd use the 428 as the in/out audio interface in live.

There's no advantage. The real advange of the usb midi keyboard is that it (most likely) is usb powered, so there's only one cable.

So I take it when using USB you are still sending and receiving midi?

the tascam us-428 is a midi interface (as well as an audio interface)... it talks to the computer via the usb port.

so... usb is the protacol through which both midi messages, and audio signals are being transmitted.
