The new Live compressor.-How does it sound?

Post by vanheusen » Thu Oct 11, 2007 12:27 pm

For those of you beta testing this, how does this thing sound? How does it compare with third party plugins? Since this might actually be a reason for many to upgrade, it would be great to know.

I was just coming to post about it actually :)

I'm actually a bit suprised, it's definitely an improvement from before. Still probably not my first choice in compressors for my needs, the new opto mode and Feedback options really help smooth things out. Well done Abe's!

How would you compare it to FabFilter Pro-C?

Approaching sound quality of Pro-C....closer to Compressor I and II....or somewhere inbetween?

For "ME" the Sonalksis one still wins, ditto on Logic's but only by the littlest bit. Live's new opto mode is nice, but the other modes are still not that great "IMVHO".

What you all think could be totally different, so make up your own minds once you get to play with it.

thing is, it's unreasonable to think live would have a compressor as good as those provided at much higher cost by companies that don't have to work on anything other than some fx. so i'm still likely to use sonalksis, but it's nice to know live's getting close(r). sides which, if i really want things to sound good, i still go outbd, because i still haven't heard SW that really touches a high-end HW compressor.

This is what I'm wondering...given that I bought pro-c a few weeks ago for slightly more than the cost of the live upgrade :?.

i think lives compressor is great and very versatile.

its versatile and works great all round, on invidividual channels, sub comps or as a master effect.

its not better/worse than any of the top contenders for me. it just sits in the top and they all have their own uses.

side-chaining is nice:

I could live with the default Live compressor and ChamelPhat, one for clean compression, and the other for dirty. --Kent
