hmm - im curious why you would need that - do you know what youre playing? :o

if you look at the midi clip you're recording, itll show a keyboard view on the side of notes being triggered. like that, you mean?

i'm a really bad musician i dont know chords by memory! :S

so it would be nice for me to see what chords i'm playing, like in Logic 8 Transport Bar, if i play more than 2 notes it immediately show the chord i'm playing.

There might be a M4L plugin that does this.

I think Reaper might do this as well (but I'm not sure) with a JS plugin or notation editor.

There are many M4L and third party VST/AU for chords /melodies /bass (generate, follow chords, etc)...

To mainly detect chords, and play/stay in key/scale (hardware aside - push 2, s61 etc) I would start with these;

* Ableton Scale MIDI effect (moves notes into scale selected)
* Piano roll zoomed (not ideal with hardware but you can fold back to only see the scale). Can PM you the .ALC files for all scales
* AutoTheory 5 (shows notes played stand alone or plug in)
* Chord Composer
* Chord MIDI effect built into AB
* Chordio
* EZ Keys (has sounds and MIDI also, but works really well)
* Instachord
* Instascale
* J74 HarmoTools
* Mixed in Key Studio
* Scaler (excellent > one of my faves and shows the notes /chords played, captures chord from audio, generates, ++++)

I recommend demo first (if available) to see which suit you best,

Hope that helps

Forgot about Hornet, that one works also.
Really depends how in depth you want to get.

Another way using Ableton stock (and no plug ins) is to add the Audio Effect “Spectrum”, play the key, and point your mouse to the highest frequency at the top. You will see the key on the left. Best to expand the view.

I'll add a plug for one of my M4L devices that may be helpful:

Apollo Chord Designer - http://tetmusic.com/apollo_features.html

Image

4x8 of chord triggers - use preset chords or create custom ones
3x8 of "free play" keys
1x8 of chord "pluck" keys

Works with grid and other MIDI controllers. Check product page for more info.
