Slicing a loop

Post by kickerkeef » Wed Nov 21, 2007 12:33 pm

Hi,

This is a basic question. How do I quickly cut a section (to create a loop) from a piece of audio? I cant find a quick way of doing this.

I need help!

Thank you

Keith

in an audio clip:

there are 2 markers above the waveform:

Left and Right

Just move the Left to the beginning of your loop and
the Right to the end. enable the "loop" button.

Thanks. How do I cut that 'loop' and paste it to a new audio track in order to create a new, shorter sample?

Is Live designed to be easy for cutting samples from audio tracks or am I wasting my time? :?

switch to arrangement view, maximise the track, move red marker to point you want to cut to and hit 'ctrl and e', this will cut the sample.

Another way would be to highlght the area to be cut and simply copy/paste into another track

right click and you will get a context menu - choose 'crop sample' this makes a new short sample and puts it in the project audio folder.

You can also mark the section you want to become the new sample and then press "ctrl j" to consolidate the sample.

I do this quite often, it's very interesting to cut some pieces of different samples and then drag and drop them into impulse or simpler to create new freaky things ..

If you have a very long sample and just want use a short part of it, consolidating is a good way to save space on your harddisk.

Warminstrel: how do i access this red marker?

and also, I can only see audio tracks in the arrangement window if i record a section first then then switch to the 'arrangement' view. is there a quicker way?

you can drag and drop clips from session to arrangement and vie versa.

But for creating new, smaller samples: The most convenient way is the "crop sample" option - in both session and arrangement. Select the sample, in the clip view set the start and end markers as you need, then rightclick and chose "crop sample". A new, shorter sample will be created.

To bear in mind: If you had the original sample warped and original tempo/pitch has changed, then there might be some degradations in sound quality. Those will be rendered into the new sample.

Also be aware that cropping creates a new sample, so your project will actually contain more samples than before. So lots of cropping will increase the size of your project. If you don't need the original long sample anymore you can find it when doing "project management", live will show you "unused samples" and you can delete them manually in live's browser.

The "consolidate sample"-option is handy when you want to connect two different samples, or edit out a part of the sample and then reconnect the remaining first and last part of it.

Live has a "non-destructive"-approach, meaning that you can do all possible stuff to your samples without destructively editing them. In fact you can make thousands of little clips out of one large recording without ever editing this sample into new little parts of it. Thus saving a lot of space on your hard disk.

But if you have a 10 minute recording and need only a very little part of it, then obviously cropping or editing and consolidating makes a lot of sense.
