2 Geneal Question, ( Midi & Note length) please help!

Hello,

im a Live 6 newbie so i hope this excuse my question.
i ve looked in my Manual and in a special Tips and Tricks book but i can´t find a solution.
I use since 15 Years Cubase and i wan´t to switch now total to Live. But im so deep in this sh.t Steinberg way that it´s hard to switch over to Live.
So i have 2 Questions witchg are hard for me and easy for a Live user

I have 2 simple questions:

1.
i wan´t to use a Midikeybord to play a midi instrument. But i just can use the keybord to play notes when the Headphone and the Recording Button for the Track is active. Then i can play but it records thart what i ve played.
Is there a way to play the notes without activating the recording button?
There must be a way to play a midi instrument without recording it ! Buit how To ??

2.
I want to create a note witch has the same length than the track,
i ve played witch the not lengt when i klicked in the grid with the right mouse button but there are only a few lengths how can i make longer notes ?

I hope some one can help me !?

pleasue! live is a step down from cubase DAW-wise, if uve spent 15 years learnin cubase then id only switch to logic!

if u hit the headphone button it wont record unless you are also pressing the play button and/or the MAIN trainsport record button

dunno what u mean bout makin a note the length of the track? try turnin the snap off or right click on the grid

1. Not sure i understand, but it seems that you are playing over an existing clip with OVR on. Turn off OVR (overdub) in the transport section to play without recording.

2. On a PC, press ctrl+4 to turn off the grid and ctrl+b to turn off the pencil. Now you can make the note any length you want.

1, when it comes time you like the new part you are doing, but don't want it on the same track, you have to be a little bit tricksy.
Create two new tracks. Move your old MIDI data to the first. Route the output both new tracks to "MIDI TRACK 1" (your original track with the instrument/VSTi on it). Change the input of that track from "auto" to "in".

Now, your old track behaves like a hardware instrument, you can route multiple MIDI tracks to it and it'll play all of them.

(that overdubbing while playing problem was really weird for me, too, having switched from Cubase to Live. I say: don't look back, Live is awesome.)

thanks all for help..i will try it .

by the way. Cubase 4.1 ( the newest) has a lot of bugs and working with it is not doable. Live has a lot of mnice thinks i need so . i try to do some new tracks... and live was cheaper than cubase
