Created Library fails in Windows XP

Post by sanyama » Wed Dec 05, 2007 7:37 am

Is this a bug or what?
Live 7 is unable to install the library to a new folder created under Windows XP. This is because XP sets the read-only attribute of all folders (lots of articles about it).
The (destructive) workaround for this is to point Live 7 to the existing Library folder from Live 6 with the risk of things getting replaced or overwritten.

Have any of you guys experienced this?
I am surprised this got through Ableton QA because it is a known system problem.

Hi saniama,

The Read-only flag on Windows XP has been sort of hijacked by other features, and does not really serve its purpose anymore. The simple read-only checkmark on the general properties' panel does not for instance prevent you from creating files and folders in there. The real read-only attribute is in the rights-management section of the folder's properties.

Could it be that you have another problem, such as the library folder belonging to a different system-user? Feel free to provide links to articles that you think are relevant to this problem.

Cheers,

Carl

Hi Carl,
I know the flag is bastardized by XP but Live 7 checks it and refuses to create a library in that folder. I'm quite sure that the folder is "owned" by my "Windows user" and not by some other user. In fact I created it while installing Live.

I did an install of Live 7.01 to my new PC with WinXP SP2 and latest updates from them. I created a new directory prior to selecting where to install the library (had to back up and go back into the directory so it picked up the new directory in the listing/dialog box) and installed fine to the new location. I didn't want to update my Live 6 install. I had no issues with it.

Is the read-only flag set on your new Library folder?
If you did not customze the XP folders look and feel (through Explorer), then the flag may not have been set.

I tried all kinds of things after creating a new folder for the Library; I even restarted my computer and Live a numder of times but Live kept giving an error that the folder was read-only. Strangely though, it worked with the Live 6 folder which was read-only too. Weird!

Hi,

I just looked at properties and it's set to read-only but that doesn't really make a difference from what I've read in this or other threads with folks having library issues. So far it's ok here. I've just installed EIC I and my global orchestra Akai disc (went into Sampler->Imported).

weird. I was able to point Live7 to the old library folder (which was also read-only) and it worked fine.
Maybe the code checks the attribute if the target folder is empty?

Luckily I'm not really stuck, although some clips did get messed up.
