Live 7.0.1 disabling OS X IAC Bus when in ReWire Slave mode

Post by Per Boysen » Mon Dec 10, 2007 7:09 am

This is one of the worst bugs in Live and I'm amazed it was still allowed in version 7!

When you run Live as ReWire slave the IAC Busses are disabled and you can't send MIDI back to the host application. What a waste for all those nifty MIDI plug-ins of Live's!

Does anyone know why this isn't fixed? It has constantly been reported for many versions back. Is it something with bad coding on a deeper level that is too late to fix?

Is there any hope for the future that we may use Live's superb MIDI plug-in capabilities within other ReWire applications?

i doubt its a bug, probably more likely that its due to running live as rewire slave which would cause the iac bus to be unusable...

as i understand it rewire is a protocol for sending audio between applications, i'm not so sure it can handle MIDI in the same way. i realise you can send it from rewire master to slave, but i what i'm saying is i dont think it works the other way round (from slave back to master). I imagine this would lead to some MIDI feedback and timing problems.

having said that i'm not a big user of rewire so maybe things have changed since the last time i used it.

maybe you could work out a way round it using an app like bidule, max / max PD...

or you could just do all the midi stuff in live then export MIDI clips back to the host - probably not that intuitive!

You're miss the point.

There's no need to send MIDI through ReWire! But there's A BIG NEED for syncing two applications by ReWire. One reason you might want to do that is MIDI processing, as in arpeggio treatments.

I am reporting this because other applications can sync by ReWire and still send/receive MIDI through the IAC Bus ports. It's just a shame that Live doesn't. My hope is that it has just been forgotten and can be fixed.
