- yes yes. god it winds me up when people slate fruityloops - i don't want to get into a apps debate either but fruity is pro. for gods sake. its an infinite sampler with vst/dx support....if you put shit in any program you're gonna get shit out of it...(thats the biggest criticism I hear about fruity - that it sounds crap, "unprofessional" - thats bullshit) ..people who dis fruity have never used it properly.....fruity is don. i only wish i could hook it up solidly with Live.........that would be a wicked combination..blaknoize wrote:P.S. - I'm a "pro". I use FruityLoops. That makes it a "pro" app in my book. It can do quite a few things other "pro" apps can't. If they dropped the silly name and called it "SampleStudio Pro X 3000" or something and charged $500, everyone would want it.
had to say that...
I think live sounds great!
I love the sound of Live. .I think the FX are great too..
Live was not meant to act as a midi sequencer or drum machine..
Hard to compare what you are trying to do..See if Fruity can do what Live does with looping?T he envelopes in Fruity on its drum machine thing were made for making drum patterns. Live does not have these alogorhthms,(nor was it intended), as it was intended for midi sequencing..Rewire it to something like Reason or Cubase..then you have dum sequencing and audio capabilities all in one.
Live does a excellent job for what its mission was intended for..
Live also is very original and not just another all in one virtual studio..
This program is like software of the Future..that we all dreamed of years ago..
Quit worying so much and use Live for what it does best and use other apps with it to complete your needs..Be creative with your studio as much as in your music production..My 2 cents..
ahh one last thing..to respect to Ableton : do not compare Fruity and Live
..light years apart ..and what is a Pro audio app?T his is rediculous..Make music with anything that works well for you..

Re: I think live sounds great!
We weren't really comparing the features of Live with Fruity Loops - just the sound. That said, what I really want is ACID for the Mac - while Live goes way beyond in some respects, in others it's not quite there yet. Yes I can use something else for full-on MIDI sequencing, but if I just want to add a kick drum behind a loop, I see no reason why I should go to another program when a one-shot mode and more quantize options will do the trick.claudek wrote:Live was not meant to act as a midi sequencer or drum machine.. I 've been using Live to DJ in the clubs for quite a while now and find it amazing revolutionary app... BUT i am constantly strugling with the EQ settings ... one night it might sound OK and the next... all muffled.
So, I wonder how you guys improve the sound quality coming out of computer when you play live with LIVE?
What settings in Live or external sound gear you guys use( Sound system , outboard EQ's etc.)
I mean what would be the best Compression and EQ settings in Live for general DJing .. and how should the EQ settings than bei altered in the club sound system?

forgot to say what gear i use:
Pismo PowerBook 500Mhz
External FireWire HD
MOTU 828 FireWire sound interface
Tascam US428 for MIDI control only
OS 9.2.2
Ableton Live 1.5.2 with compressor settings: Ratio-2:01, Attack - 3.96ms, Release 1.71 ms. EQ Four with all 4 EQ bands gained up.
Playing mostly originaly recorded loops , few loops from sample CD's, few cut from Vinyl records.
to hear some of the examples of me playing live with Live check the website:

I heard the TC Powercore card works very good with Live. There are very good Plug ins!!!:)jazze wrote:I 've been using Live to DJ in the clubs for quite a while now and find it amazing revolutionary app... Let me ask you something:blaknboize wrote:The reason you're hearing such a difference is because the loop made with FruityLoops is louder. Normalizing simply brings the peaks to digital maximum, but by checking the average (RMS) level, you will see that the FruityLoops one is on average about 2dB louder than the Live one. If you used a VU meter (I use PSP's 'Vintage Meter') you would see the difference instantly. And louder sounds "better" to most people.
Post your files again WITHOUT normalizing so I can test and match the levels.
Do you have something on your ears??
You better vistit an ear doctor.

Re: Live's BIGGEST PROBLEM or why LIVE isn't a prof. audio soft
[quote="MM"]Hello guys,
I really love LIVE !! It's the most innovative software long time ago !!
but there is just one thing that makes me really sad...
it's the sound quality ...
if you put Samples in Live they get a "live touch" that means
that they sound different...
ok, I think it's not easy to imagine (talking about sounds
...)
so i did 2 audio examples for you...
I used 3 sounds , all samples of my 808... bd, clap, cl hh..
I made a short loop in Ableton Live and the same in Fruityloops
using the same 3 samples and exported every loop to a wave file..
I just normalised the wave files and that's it.... (no compression,
eq, or something else...)
here you can download these 2 files:
http://people.freenet.de/fruitylive/808fruit.wav
http://people.freenet.de/fruitylive/808live.wav
when you use a headphone you can hear the differences much better...
I think the one did with live doesn't really sound as good as
the one did with Fruity..
the live one sounds not as "brilliant" and "present" as the fruity-loop...
just listen to the attack and the bass part of the 808 kick
and especially to the decay of the clap ...
the loop made with fruity sounds to nearly to 100% as the
single-samples do... there I can't hear any difference....
so what's the problem with ableton ???
is it thig, which can be fixed ??
is there a kind of in build data compression ????
It would be very fine, if one of the developer guys
find the time to answer...
I'm really interested....
so far...
cheers ---
The sound quality is OK in Live.It isn´t like in Logic, but OK.
Don´t forget it that Live hasn´t a Audio engine like Logic,it´s a fusion between Sampler and Sequencer.
I hope ableton will not start to change the Audio engine now,or make better plug ins.Heey this will take years. It´s somehow like Reverb, this takes many years of expierence.
I´m waiting one year long for MIDI functions.I thought Live is a Live Sequencer, and a LIVE SEQUENCER NEEDS MIDI AT FIRST!!!!!!!
Ít´s much more important than Plug ins or something. You cannot use these Plug ins for a serious live show, you need to make the settings in the PA System.
So PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAASE ableton, don´t waste time and energy for plug ins or the sound engine or VSTi,make MIDI first.
PLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAASE!!!!!!
And about the Studio quality discussion.
Do you really believe that you got Studio quality when you simple use a computer, install Cubase....and that´s your studio??
Yeahhh, maybe YES,but a Studio quality which is 15 years old.
It´s OK,but please don´t blame the ableton crew and say that other software has pro quality.
If you need somehow "Pro"quality, you need to use DSP Systems or Hardware.
I mean...what do you got from the "good"quality of the Cakewalk/Fruity engine when you don´t have the right effects for this??
Or do you make songs just with a clear HiHats??

hey,let this stuipid comments mousehead.if you don´t need MIDI,then you don´t need to use it.hhead wrote:look, you babies:
FUCK MIDI

FUCK VSTi
midi and instruments isn't what ableton is doing with this program.
use rewire with your vsti stuff, dammit.
and for ableton:
ONE SHOT MODE would really make Live my best friend.
thanks, hhead
there are many musicians who need MIDI.
what is ONE SHOT MODE???
It is still a music sequencer,not a kindergarten toy.Okk??

It's interesting that there is so much opposition to this guys opinions...
I often think that the mixer in Live is inferior to other software...
In particular I think the master out is far to easy to clip... many new software packages have ways to handle the total volume of combined sounds... SX, Logic... etc..
