How should we map the MPD24's Encoders to the Macro-Controls in Racks?

You decide: MPD24 Encoder Mappings

Post by jab » Mon Jan 14, 2008 5:12 pm

Hi,

we are currently working on the instant mappings for the
Akai MPD24 in Live 7. While the Encoders are arranged
in four rows of two on the controller, we still need to map
them to the macros on our racks, which are arranged in
two rows of four.

As there are different opinions regarding this topic, we
would like to know yours so we can implement the most
commonly accepted solution.

cheers,
Jan

yeah the arrangement is stupid. I'd prefer from top to bottom! K7 to K1 an K8 to K2.

Are you also working on implemeting mmc for the mpd 24? this would be terrific!

thx

counter-clockwise rotation would make the most sense, I think - I mean, if you look at the unit at an angle you still "get" the 2x4 layout, even though it's 4x2, right?

Good to see you with the nose to the grindstone there, Jan ;)

Irrespective of how you map the controls, you may want to know about a bug in some versions of the MPD24 (including the latest, 1.07): When you set one of its pads to transmit a program change, the pad transmits a second change, to program 0, when you release it.

So if you want to set an MPD24 pad to select a particular patch, or to trigger an event, you wind up with these spurious signals with no way to avoid them.

I told the folks at AKAI about the problem, and they said they've relayed it to the developers, but have no comment on when, or even if, the problem will be fixed.

So if you're working on an MPD24 mapping, you might want to include a way of working around this particular problem.

The Akai MPD 32 is coming out soon will the mappings work for that controller? I think the users of MPD 24 will fade fast in favor of the MPD 32.

I already own an MPD24 and can't imagine wanting to buy an MPD32 any time soon.

Just bought an MPD24 today. Bought a Trigger Finger first and returned because the quality was crappy. Sam Ash didn't have any MPD32s and the Pad Kontrol only has two knobs. The MPD24 mappings will be a great addition to Live. Will it be ready next update 7.0.3?

Akai released OS 1.09 for the MPD 24 which adds CC to the transport. Haven't tried it yet but, it looks like the transport controls will finally work with Live. This is from an Akai PDF from akaipro.com:

Version: 1.09
Date: 03/07/07
New features/Changes:
1. Add MIDI CC functionality to the transport buttons.
Bug fixes:
1. Ensure that Sysex Device Enquiry is sent over both USB and MIDI
2. Fixed Updater to work with Windows Vista PCs.
3. Fixed bug where pads set to send program change would always send a 0 through the
MIDI connection.

Installed the 1.09 update and the transport now transmits CC 115-119. They are not editable to different numbers. Well it's good enough. Also program change now works correctly. Hopefully Ableton is implementing the transport into the new mappings. I'm sure they are in the know already :D

I installed the 1.09 update and it turned my MPD24 into an expensive paperweight. It's at the repair shop now.
