Negative as in depressing. Like, creating art brings joy to a lot of people. For someone like this to be told something to the effect of 'creating art is a waste of time', is discouraging.blank wrote:negative for what ?dn83 wrote:How should I respond to this mentality? Someone recently said something similar to me, so I wanted to get others' opinions on the matter.
does it make you happy? yes? fuck 'em then.dn83 wrote:Negative as in depressing. Like, creating art brings joy to a lot of people. For someone like this to be told something to the effect of 'creating art is a waste of time', is discouraging.

I'm just referring to creating in general. It's been proposed from an evolutionary/instinctual point of view that part of why we create things is to attract a mate, show-off and otherwise gain the attention of others or what not. I'm looking for other opinions on why we create. For example, I could say that for me, it's because music allows me to enter another world, slightly outside the mundane...sweetjesus wrote:not all art is music

Opinions like this just get to me sometimes. It makes me feel guilty for wanting to work on a song or painting...guilty because I could be doing something less 'self-indulgent' to combat the atrocities of the world.
And it's not just about atrocities for example, it's about progress too. Someone could say something to the effect of 'art didn't get us to the Moon'...you know?
How would you combat these attitudes? Again, it just gets to me sometimes. Because although I feel art is such an important part of the human experience, I get the points of these arguments too...

I agree, its sort of a harsh way of putting it, but its true.
people make music or art either because they cant find what they want, and they want just that right thing for just them,
or, they make music to show off, and feel accepted into the world on some level.
EVERYTHING we do is for self gratification in the end, otherwise, we wouldn't do it.
