Novation Remote Zero SL and Ableton Live 7

Post by eric.mould » Tue Mar 25, 2008 7:00 pm

I can not get My Novation Remote Zero SL to link with Ableton 7.
Does anyone have specific instructions on the proper in/out MIDI settings and which order the Novation should be in (input one or two, etc.). I am also using an M-Audio Radium 49.
My original settings were to place the Novation first and select port 2 on the in/out and the M-audio second.

The Novation can automap to Reason and VSTs, just not with Ableton.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Eric

Choose RemoteSL als Control Surface with port 2 as Input and Output. In MIDI ports use Input: Remote SL (Port 1) and Input: Remote SL Input (Port 2) as Track and Remote. Use Output: Remote SL (Port 1) as Track and Sync.

Enjoy!

Cids:

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will try this tonight.

Cids:

I followed your instructions precisely and the Novation still did not communicate with Ableton. I even disabled the Radium 49 MIDI settings so the Novation was the only control surface enabled. Do you have a screen shot of the settings or can I send a screen shot of my settings to you? Thank you in advance once again for your time. This is getting sort of frustrating.

Eric

Hi Eric,

please make sure, preset 40 is selected in your RemoteSL.
You should be fine setting up Live´s Midi/Sync preferences like Cids described it. You can find a screenshot and detailed instructions in Novation´s Automap Universal guide, p. 23:

Novation Remote Zero SL and Ableton Live 7

Post by eric.mould » Fri Mar 28, 2008 1:47 pm

OK; I followed he instructions precisely and A7 still does not sync with the Novation. The only other thing I can do is to completely uninstall the SW for the Novation and Auto Map. The Novation received an update at one point so perhaps there is a glitch in the SW.
Is there a method to re-instating the Novation to factory settings?

Regards,

Eric

Hi Eric,

I spent almost the whole last night with the same probs - now everything works like charme. Here's what I did:

1) installed the drivers + automap server (incl. OS update to v4.1.09)
2) started Live
3) set up MIDI prefs exactly the way told here before (as in the universal guide pdf)
4) chose template 40 on the SL

=> at this point, the SL synced with Ableton, so I could see the volume values etc above the sliders,
however I still couldn't change any value, so...

5) pressed GLOBAL on the SL, adjusting some false settings:

MIDITo -> U2
PotMode -> PICK-UP
MidiClk -> USB2
Change -> U2
MClk-To -> OFF (I let Live sync the SL, not reverse)
BPMPort -> ON
IDPorts -> U2
HUI -> OFF

6) pressed TEMPLATE on the SL, adjusting values to..

ProgChan -> 1
ProgPort -> U2
ComnChan -> 1
ComnPort -> U2

Since then, the SL's working great :) Maybe this helps you too.

Ah, one final thing: I noticed audio crackles when switching quickly from one plugin/device to another (like from a VST synth over to Impulse etc). I almost got mad thinking this is a new bug, but it disappeared as soon as I uncheched the "Delay compensation" in Live.

Best regards from Berlin

Thank you for this post. This is data I need to resolve this issue. The default settings did not work so manual settings/re-installation is the only choice. thanks again.

I don't know. I'm following these instructions and all I get is "Ableton is Offline"

This is getting tedious. I'm about to revert back to Live 6 where things worked.

I know the following may sound at bit ridiculous, so please don't consider it offensive. Maybe it's just a very basic mistake...

Have you switched on the SL before starting Live? I get that 'Ableton is offline' message only if the SL wasn't already switched on at the time Live starts and initializes itself and the devices.

Has the SL been recognized by the system, anyway, so that it's actually being listed as "REMOTE SL" in the device manager (in case you're using WinXP and have installed the driver)?

Is the Automap Universal Server running (icon in the tray)? The very latest betas can be found here: http://mail.focusrite.com/beta/remote_sl/. (I am succesfully running the latest v2.0.1188)

In case your template 40 is simply f***ed up a little, inside Live midi settings you might also try to use the "dump" button next to the control surface. Just click dump next to the selected SL in Live and see if the SL is doing anything (actually, I wouldn't overwrite the 40 but select something like template#36 before!). In case it receives the new template successfully, that one's probably got to be still adjusted a little (usb ports to USB2 as described in this thread before).

It's a great controller & a great piece of software - don't give up too early ;)

Good luck ~

Novation Remote25sl powers up with the computer. Yes it's on first.

Driver Installed (and reinstalled)

Automap server Launches as it should with Live. There it is in the tray!

Hit "Dump." Nothing happened.

It was working in 7.02 but 03 seems to break it again. Until the dust settles I'm going back to 6.01. This is really getting ponderous.

OK, I have tried everything suggested and it still does not work. The auto map icon is on and functional, the midi in/out selected properly, Novation on B4 A7 initiated, the Novation will automap to Reason and other SW, just does not work with A7; the offline message. I updated the Novation and it took the update successfully, I have tried these settings from BB:

1) installed the drivers + automap server (incl. OS update to v4.1.09)
2) started Live
3) set up MIDI prefs exactly the way told here before (as in the universal guide pdf)
4) chose template 40 on the SL

5) pressed GLOBAL on the SL, adjusting some false settings:

PotMode -> PICK-UP
MidiClk -> USB2
Change -> U2
MClk-To -> OFF (I let Live sync the SL, not reverse)
BPMPort -> ON
IDPorts -> U2
HUI -> OFF

6) pressed TEMPLATE on the SL, adjusting values to..

ProgChan -> 1
ProgPort -> U2
ComnChan -> 1
ComnPort -> U2

This just froze the Novation and no sliders or knobs worked and nothing on the screen; just blank.

I have tried just about everything; this should not be this glitchy and refer to this system as "Auto" map; should be coined "manual" map.

One more note:

The "dump" buttons do not illuminate, so they are non-functional. I will try a previous beta version of automap as suggested in this thread. After that it is A6.

Hi Eric,

no need to use the Dump button (if it´s not available, than you have selected different ports than port 2 as in-and ouput ports).

Please use the Remote SL installer 4.1. Make sure Remote SL´s operating system and templates are being updated. Follow the installation instructions carefully.

No need to make further adjustments in your Remote SL.

Simply set up your Midi/Sync preferences in Live as described before. Pick your SL as a control surface, choose port 2 as an input and output port. The order of your selected control surfaces is not important.

Choose "MME" as a port type ("Direct Music" should function as well, btw.).
Activate "track", "sync" and "remote" as described in the automap universal guide.

If this setup should not work, please send us a screenshot of your Midi/sync preferences to [email protected]
