Personally,

If I were going to buy any camera available at the moment, at least in a semi-reasonable price range, it would be the Nikon D300. I currently have a D50, which was replaced with the D40 a couple years ago. It's an OK camera, and the D40 and 60 do more, but the 300 is a truly fine machine. Ken Rockwell's pompous-yet-informative self pretty much sold me on it with his reviews:

If you're serious about starting to take some photos, don't waste your time with the more consumery models, unless you're just really limited on cash. Having full control of white balance is, in itself, worth hundreds of dollars if you want any accuracy.

While Canon has been trying to jam more pixels on their sensors, Nikon has been consistently making better cameras instead. (Seriously, you don't need 85 megapixels. How big is your fricking hard drive, anyway, you know?) They're more ergonomic for humans to use, and have more usable menus and buttons. And you can hammer nails with them. This is from someone who was in love with a Canon A-1 for about 25 years.

Also, Nikon is second only to Pentax and maybe some expensive German cameras in the department of lens compatibility...you can slide a 1960ish Nikon lens on your D300, no problem. Canon, on the other hand, uh...

And that's about enough space-chewing babble. :)

I use Canon bodies and Nikon lenses. Canon have just released a new prosumer camera with Live view which is worth a look.

Thanks
wifey also recommends the Nikon D40x or the cannon EOS XTI, both of them come with an 18-55 mm lens. Not a full fledged professional unit, but a good entry level semi-pro camera.
