EXPress Card Slot vs. PCMCIA slot-which is faster?
EXPress Card Slot vs. PCMCIA slot-which is faster?
has anybody done a comparison?
Re: EXPress Card Slot vs. PCMCIA slot-which is faster?
The express card is faster by design. However, it's hard to say how useful that is, because it seems like only a few things are express cards per se. There seem to be plenty of wireless cards, and there are "usb/FW express card expansion ports", and even "PCMCIA to express card adapters".EgAD wrote:has anybody done a comparison?
It seems like an express card-based audio/midi interface could kick some butt, but none exist.

it looks way sweet.
[edit] I've got kind of a philosophical thing about buying an interface that is conceivably more expensive than the computer that it could be run on.

A PCMCIA card is essentially an old fashioned PCI card in a different package, I think.
An ExpressCard, as I understand it, can be either a USB 2.0 device or a PCIe device in PCMCIA-style case. The later is obviously faster than regular PCI and thus PCMCIA but USB 2 is, well, USB 2.
I doubt anyone would make an ExpressCard audio interface and use USB2, though, but for things like card readers etc. they might.

well i'm thinking about getting a new laptop, but maybe one with a pcmcia slot cause I've got an old echo indigo card that is just an exceptional card, i loved using that thing, I'm aware though that echo are suppose to come out with an express version so i'm just not sure what to do. I've got an m-audio transit for out an abouts right now but I hate the usb cable and really miss the convenience of the indigo.
Some one posted long time ago that,Echo Audio will bring out an express card indigo.EgAD wrote:well i'm thinking about getting a new laptop, but maybe one with a pcmcia slot cause I've got an old echo indigo card that is just an exceptional card, i loved using that thing, I'm aware though that echo are suppose to come out with an express version so i'm just not sure what to do. Minimum latency setting for RME PCI, PCMCIA and Firewire cards is 1.5 ms, for PCI-Express and ExpressCard it's 0.7 ms. So obviously RME was able to squeeze more performance out of PCI-Express. The main advantage compared to PCI is that PCI devices all have to share the same bus while PCI Express devices all get their own dedicated line (less traffic-jams).
If you really want something cool to plugin to you ExpressCard slot...

But for that price, the RME's are way more "cooler" than this...husker wrote:If you really want something cool to plugin to you ExpressCard slot...
