Remix Radiohead

Post by polyslax » Tue Apr 01, 2008 3:10 pm

British rock act Radiohead has taken a different approach with its latest single, the band has announced. Rather than commission a series of professional remixes for "Nude," any musician can now buy the song's underlying elements on iTunes (link), and remix them into a new track. Available "stems" include the voice, bass, guitar, drum, and string/FX layers; while shoppers have to buy before April 8th to get free GarageBand project files, the layers can be edited using many other programs, such as Logic.
Completed remixes can then be uploaded to a special Radiohead website, where people can vote on their favorite mixes until May 1st, the best of which will be heard by the band. MySpace and Facebook widgets can be used to simplify voting by friends and strangers.

Interesting idea, but I dont like the way they make you pay for the stems. I prefer Nine Inch Nails version where they give you the stems for free.

But like i say. It's a nice to get the chance to do remixes like this :-)

It is an awesome idea, the whole 'remix your favorite band' thing. I don't think I'll be paying for it though! The £20 I shelled out for NIN's last remix CD, with the files for the album is keeping me going for now...

Thanks for posting this! Shame you have to pay to get the stems. Wonder how the voting thing is going to work - surely the "winner" will just be whoever can make a half-arsed remix, but who has the best bot-writing skills to auto-vote for them.

I agree that this type of remixing is awesome for the fans....however, I will not be paying for the tracks to the song. Trent Reznor has released enough master tracks for me to remix into retirement....and free at that. 8O

Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno & David Byrne released their multi-track elements for nothing and their music is excellent. Radiohead haven't and their music is shit.

you pay for a high (ish) profile remix. this thing is on every paper in the world. the top mix right now is from holy fuck, a pretty well known band. not the nicest thing in the world to make us pay, but for 5 bucks i'm in.

Mine's http://www.radioheadremix.com/remix/?id=1084

I don't know how to describe it other than to say it's sleepier than the original, which was not how I expected it to turn out.

Was a fun little project though.

Sounds pretty good...

Uhh... yeah... you probably should've bought 'em if you were planning on actually entering the contest.

Good luck?

i really don't understand, why to pay for remixparts and spend
a lot of my own time, heart and soul to work with this marketing stuff.
it's a shame!
