Sending MIDI to an effect plugin

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to send the output of a MIDI track to an effect plugin on an audio track?

I read a thread on the Public Beta forum which described this, but it doesn't work on my setup.

I have one audio track with a Pro-53 FX plugin, and a MIDI track. However the Pro-53 FX plugin does not appear as an output destination on the MIDI track.

Do I need to do anything to set this up?

I'm using Live 4.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.3.5.

Personally I prefer live´s envelopes over midi cc´s and I´m not sure why you´d want midi here; it´s less accurate and more primitive. There are occasions where midi makes sense, particularly where note data is involved (to control filters for example). on those occasions i´ve been using the "synth" version of modular synth plugins, particularly Tassman, and construct a audio in setup with that. Just because Live sees it as a synth doesn´t need to mean it functions as one and with some simple routing you are in business.

I realise that doesn´t answer your question, I guess i´m not sure why the question is asked.

My main reason is to pass note data into the plugin. Your suggestion of using the instrument version works where there is one, but some plugins are effects only, so this is not an option.

I see. perhaps you use different plugins than i do, but i think that most effect plugins i know don´t even like note data, even if you can somehow get it to them. it´s a shame realy because many effects have tonal elements that could be played quite well, i see no problem at all with "playing" the central frequency of a flanger, for example.

one thing you could considder is "wrapping" a normal effect plugin in a synth edit plugin. i think synth edit alows you to use other vsts as modules, you could mape the note input to some effect controler you like (taking care to rescale the data if nesicary), then compile the whole thing into a synth type plugin, that might work. it may also be illegal and cumbersome but if you absolutely need your note data there....

I don't think the pro-53FX plugin takes midi note data ?

(The pro53 plug does, of course, but you already know that)
Why would the -fx version need midi note in?

You need to send note data to the Pro 53 when it's used as an effect to trigger the envelopes.

I have had no problems sending MIDI note data to non-instrument effects simply by creating a MIDI track, turning monitor on, and setting its output to the track that contains the plugin. I am unsure of why this would not work for you... did you forget the monitor switch? (I apologize if I have deeply insulted your inteligence, but I ask because I am quite forgetful)
