I play on average of bout 80 shows a year.. I'd go fuckin crazy if I was to stop doing the live shows, and only have connection through virtual means with people.. Yeah it can be hard work to get everything together to make a live show, but imo it's soo worth it.. I think it's like the most natural thing, make music and witness people digging what you're doing and getting off on it together.. Thank fuck we cant emulate this.. Coz you know we would if we could.. And like all emulation it just AINT the same!

Perhaps one reason that people don't obey the laws is that the laws are so difficult to obey. It's not always even possible to decide whether an action ls legal.

Here's a simple example: You make up a tune and record it. Have you violated the law? Anyone remember the George Harrison lawsuit about "My Sweet Lord?"

Or you run an open stage. At least in the USA, my understanding is that performers are not responsible for obtaining copyright licenses for the material they perform -- the responsibility is on the shoulders of the venue provider. So if a performer at your open stage plays someone else's copyrighted material, and RIAA decides to sue, it's you they'll sue.

So suppose you want to be squeaky clean and you ask every performer to swear on a stack of bibles that they're doing all original material. Do you think you're safe now? I don't.

So until we have a collection of laws that are not impossibly hard to follow, I think it's nearly pointless to complain about pepole not following them.

if there is one good reason to make damn sure everything is independent in the future it is that it will aid in the demise of those evil fuckers

rofl. Indeed. Now if the record companies could figure out a way in which you have a chance at getting laid if you purchase one of their CDs they'd really be onto something.

isn't it possible that we don't buy cd's cause you can download them and we go to concerts cause you can't download that experience?
I think its a lot more than piracy. It's about the masses of freely available (pirated, Creative Commons etc) material that we get bombarded with every day. We have so much music that just listening to music in itself gets... boring.

It's not just that "you can't download the experience", it's that it's visceral and immersive like few things out there, I think.
I'll agree with you there, when you bombard people with entertainment we get numb to it and desire something more impactful. To me thats why you see movies that are getting way more over the top than in the past. Like the Hostel movies, we aren't scared anymore by the average monster or killer so they had to take it 500 miles over the line and do something terrible like fill a movie with torture porn. Even comedy went over the top over the years, for instance.. a kid fucking an apple pie...
since music can't exactly have the same over the top impact on cd (how exactly do you make over the top music in the same sense as the examples I gave?) we have decided to get our fill from live music.

but I still think piracy is a big part of it too.

yeah, we should try to break all laws down into an easy to remember 10 commandments type of thing.

I mean, since there are too many laws we can't expect anyone to actually follow them.

Wait, someone really asked the question of why we go to concerts?! It's simple: BECAUSE LIVE MUSIC IS GREAT.

yeah, but things have altered.
Venues are thriving here in he UK, places that have been closed for years are re-opening to cope with the live entertainment demand.

contrast that with recorded music sales. Something has changed.

I still buy CDs but less so than 10 years ago, it has to be something really special and now you can preview tha sample clips and decide whether or not to buy the CD or just to get a couple of tracks on download.

Concerts always have a special vibe that can't be captured and will always be a draw but the fact is that concert prices have gone so high to compensate for the lost CD sales etc that I don't go to those either. BAck in the tha late 90's when I was living in the UK, I could go to gigs at The Astoria 2 or Marquee or Universities and pay between 5 and 10 pounds to see a great concert, nowaday it's treble and anything in a big hall or stadium is about 5 or 6 times the cost of what it was only a few years ago. Consequently, I haven't been to many concerts either ...

Indeed. And what's really interesting is just how much pre-recorded stuff there is in live shows these days. For example, not too long ago I went to a wonderful theatrical performance, and there in the back of the auditorium was an enormous mixing board and several computers taking care of music, sound effects, lighting cues, and so on. Indeed there were a bunch of actors up there on stage doing their thing, but they had a host of machines helping them.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

I don;t go to the big gigs either - but there are a lot more avenues for live performance on a smaller scale now , because there is a paying audience for pretty much anything. I go to a lot of non-musical gigs just because I have friends who are stand-ups, comperes, burlesque promoters, 'experimental' theater types .. etc. And, although I don't really like a lot of that stuff, I'm really glad that someone does - because the more money flows through that low level small venue circuit (less than 100 capacity) the better eventual acts come out. Having a place that can run half-crap nights that can afford to keep going from door & drink takings is excellent. Once in a while I see a great act that 10 years ago would be touring for tips, now they get paid.

Mid level nights (250-500 people) are about my favourite kind of nights, a good friendly human scale - the rig can service the people and the venue isn't a big reverb unit. That these can thrive with weird acts is good news. I hate the impersonality of larger venues.
