managing the staggering amount of plug ins

I remember a thread once about windows users being able to group their plug ins so their VST folder wasn't such a mess...
I GOT A WINDOWS MACHINE

It's awesome. Can anyone point me to that thread

you just create folders in explorer (my computer) and install or copy .dll file to that folder

mac's can't do this?!?!

yeah! group them up

in my plug directory I have "effects" and "synths" under each category there are subcategories: delays/reverbs/glitchy/filters/compressors/eq , and under synths it's: drums/favorites/seldom used

most of the plugs weren't installed in those folders but you just copy their files into them and live finds them and all your old sets have no problem locating them. it's really quite convenient. saves alot of up/down scrolling time.

It's silly that macs don't let you organize your plug-ins. What I've started doing to better organize things is just rack every instrument/effect individually and then store them in Live's browser under sensible headings. Also it's nice to have the macros mapped to the plug-ins main settings like volume, filter etc.

ummm, i was just kidding.

I just organized my VST folder on my MacBook. I guess it's possible

I actually totally use what dubya mentioned. Pre made rack with my fav plugs already tucked inside, and macros doing most of the work. You can also change the layout visually of the rack so if you need to acces the plug quickly thats possible too. Obviously 8 macros doesn't always get the job done.

instead of copying the dll's you can also just create shortcuts in the organized folders...... so you make sure that every ressource of a plugin is in it's right place.

you can organize VSTs eh? Unfortunately you can't organize AUs though, which is what I always use.

That's actually an interesting tip, I'd forgotten about shortcuts. I used to do this with mp3s to organise them in different ways for DJing.

Shit, you mean a Windows shortcut? That's so simple! I didn't think Live would be able to use them in the same way... genius!

Obviously you can move your AU files about as much as you want to. Unfortunately, the actual position of the files on your hard disk has no connection with where it ends up in browser in the host. It's always "hard-wired" to be categorized by manufacturer. Unfortunately.
