By 'success' I mean anything out of the norm.. Recording deal.. Live work.. Movie/Video/Game/Ad work.. Etc..

Basically not just a bunch of new 'friends'..

I run gigs so the first point of contact is often myspace, but thats about it.

myspace is just a small part of a very big picture, it's easy to look up people there as their music is on the front page, and everyone seems to be on it, but that's about it.

If any artists world is myspace then they're fucked, myspace has be attributed to a few success stories but that's not really the full story.

Do gigs, recording deals, internet and airwaves radio play, and print media promotion count?

myspace is a waste of time.....full of time wasters and people who are bored and .....i cant stand it......
its good for finding people and networking.....tho.......
you really need to work it......THEN is helps and does good things
for you.......when i dont do anything or email anyone, nothing
happens, but when i actively reach out to people, self promote,
communicate......etc..............then good links info are made.

its just a big mess. takes too long to load pages.
too many auto responses.
too much crap on there.
people aint got time to listen to your tracks.
like me = i never listen to ANYONES music.
so i dont expect anyone to listen to mine, anymore.
too time consuming.

its only good for well established or up and coming people
who are getting success already, as the fan base grows.

and it good for keeping in touch with people you meet.
bands and industry people. friends of friends of friends etc.

you can get to some real important/professions/successful
people on there.
you would be surprised who i just spoke to on there just
the other day.

myspace is for small timers.
big timers dont bother with it.

So is it any good then?.... for getting success... I mean....

Say you work it for 1- 2 hrs a day...

Do companies use it to check out what's going on?

Or is it just some kinda lame virtual social club...

Hunt down 'the right people' and hand out CDs? What are these 'right people' going to do for you? Throw money at you? Give you a big record contract? No one is going to do shit for you. Take your career into your own hands and promote. While you chase 'the right people' who don't give a fuck about your music, I'll continue build a fan base through myspace and sell my music and make money. Your way sounds like wishful thinking. Myspace is a legitimate tool for promotion. If your successful 'the right people' will come to you.

MySpace is a fantastic networking tool for musicians. Apart from allowing you to promote yourself to other artists/people that like your music, it acts as a kind of electronic business card which anyone can look up easily. I've had plenty of opportunities + music relationships start through it.
