And if so, I guess it would be ok to wear one around those who normally would, as a sign of brotherhood/good faith/respect?

There are certain geographical places in Israel (yad v shem ...holocaust memorial....Wailing wall, etc....) Where out of respect, all people are required to cover their heads despite religious affiliations.
