Although I disagree with Breq's politics and worldview, I've been glad to read his posts here. He's increased my knowlege of the spectrum of opinion out there. While I haven't had the energy to engage him in direct debate, as others have, I've been very greatful to read the discourse. Many people (one B. Obama included) see gains to be had in talking with those we don't agree with, as well as those we do.

that'll be 2c, please

Ya know..
I really want to agree with this idea that we should be open to in gauge with people that are polar opposites of our selves.. and under other circumstances i would be right on board.. I just find it uncomfortable to do that with Breqs for any number of reasons. I spent some time reading over his old posts, including those he made before the name change, and i was left with the feeling that i probably don't want to in gauge on any topic. Which is its self quite ironic in light of the fact that i have been posting in this thread.. :? ... At the risk of this seeming like a personal attack.. it just seems to me that he had an some other agenda before joining up.. i really can't get past the picture of his set up in Afghanistan with the 9mill sitting on the desk.. i dunno.. maybe i'm just a wee bit to sensitive 8O 8O

I too turn into a big pussy at the site of a gun, even seeing one on a cop's belt makes me uncomfortable. war is a shitty topic. the thought of being a military soldier boggles my mind, but they exist.

- never get in a land war in Asia
- never trust a Sicilian when death is on the line
- and don't get involved in OT topics at the Ableton forum

and sorry for the 'a' bomb MW.

best part is I make the suggestion that work environments can affect the way a person percieves things like manners and respect etc. and I get called an elitis house painter, wow? talk about not getting it?
To spell it out for you, my work environment is likethis forum. In an office environment it's not as common for people to call each other assholes etc. I have a hard time getting how you got from that to me saying some desk jockys opinion doesn't matter?
Tone, you can ignore the rhetoric of mbreqs while calling me on making an obvious observation. You respect mbreqs because he appeals to your personal sense of decorum, while I don't get any charge from it. Then again, you're doing a great job of proving my point. Mbreqs can call all resistance to occupation Islamofascist, and you're OK with that, as long as he's polite to you, and you, lm, bounce, etc. Throwing in some lame insult to make your point doesn't do much to rhile me.

BTW when did you decide that you were admin here, and could decree who could post in your boyfriends threads? How's that working out for ya? ;)

Not me mate..
I fuckin love them...
I've shot and killed more than my share of critters and varmits..
Guns don't make nervous.. Its the odd people that fetishize them that make me feel a bit odd though.
:?
I'm a chef,, and i have a similar feeling about knives.
I'm surrounded by knives and people that use them.
I've worked with people that have boxes full of them.
I'm half convinced that a lot of these people work in kitchens, not so much because they like cooking, but more because they get to use knives... 8O

My brother was in the Army..
He said that a lot of people join up for the same reason..
There might not be any thing really wrong with them..
but they are quite attracted to the aspect of the army where they get to play with guns and blow shit up..
He told me that after basic training those people often end up being given posts driving desks or trucks.. or any thing rally to keep them away from the actual bang bang-kaboom aspects of military life...

MW - you made a comment that desk jockeys don't have the people skills that you have because of our environment. what exactly do you know about my environment? how long have you worked in an engineering firm? I worked on a paint crew for a summer, I dig that it's a no bullshit environment, do you think mine is?

at work we call each other assholes all the time. one of our best audio engineers swears constantly. I hear 'CUNT!' yelled out loud before lunch pretty much daily, for 10 years. 15 minutes don't go by when I don't hear swearing. it's also a VERY no bullshit environment, if you don't know something, say you don't or you will be pwned in no time. I'll bet I know people whose tact vs talent spans a much wider range than any of your coworkers, I know that routine, don't call me on it.

you say desk jockeys don't get it, I say you take the internet way too seriously and write about things you don't have a clue about.

I'm mostly disappointed that you had to resort to the boyfriend comment, you can cut me down much harder than that, leave the pre-pubescent gay jokes to nebulae, you're above all that.

btw please turn on your spell checker.

I wish I was an admin, I'd shut this site down in a heartbeat. :P

I just StumbledUpon a painter joke:
Blonde - Blonde Painter

A blonde, wanting to earn some extra money, decided to hire herself
out as a handy-woman and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do
neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.

"Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch," he said.
"How much will you charge me?" The blonde quickly responded, "How about $50?" The man agreed and told her that the paint and everything she would need was in the garage.

The man's wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, "Does she realize that our porch goes all the way around the house?" He responded, "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all Those dumb blonde jokes we've been getting by e-mail lately."

A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
"You're finished already?" the husband asked. "Yes," the blonde
Replied, and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats."

Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to her.

"And by the way," the blonde added, "it's not a Porch, it's a Lexus."

On my fuckin iPhone, deal with the spelling.

You're always reading way too much into what I say, never said that desk jockys don't get it. Said that a smooth approach works better if that's the norm in your environ..
Painting for one summer makes you about as much of a union painter as coding something inappleskript makes me a developer.

The painter joke was decent though.

Seriously, I would NEVER say that painters and construction workers have better people skills. You cannot imagine the crazy shit I've heard from coworkers! 8O
There is a reason I started my own business, believe me.

The point, again, for the last time, was that the basic attitude of people from desk jobs that I see most of the time is that decorum is half the battle. Construction workers are much more base. Case in point, I moved to Portland for a while, and in that year more than four times I was asked if I wanted to step outside and go toe to toe. Granted in one case I deserved it, but the rest were angry pissed off rednecks probably strung out on something (meth). I wouldn't say that construction workers have better people skills, just that abusive language, or conversely a decent vocabulary are the last things I, and other blue collar types are likely to judge you on. In most cases it's the same as any other human, it's whether you drink their brand of bear, or are into the same tunes, and sports, but IMO I think it's much less likely that office workers allow things to get as ugly.
Crews of drywall, painting, electrical etc. are often comprised of 20-40 workers, on 10 to 30 jobs, and switch up constantly. This allows for retarded amounts of long standing beefs. Not saying that office jobs don't have those, just that it tends to not be like me and this one piece of work white trash bonehead.. "My dad was a Hells Angel!"... ... with him talking shit about me to the owner of the company, and me walking right up to him and saying "Look, I don't like you, you don't like me, it's that simple!"

Now translate that over to me and you. You like guys like mbreqs and nebula who tend to have good people skills, in that they are careful not to step over certain lines etc. You had your issues with b0unce and leisuremuffin, who no doubt share a good amount of the same politics as you, but do not have the same approach to casual conversation. You actually get upset about semantics, and often, at least in my case, it doesn't seem like you're reading what I write, just firing at random. Jesus fuck do I have to write an essay for you every time TD?

Plus, the point is completely covered up with bullshit semantic nit picking, being that mbreqs can have a decent conversational style all he wants, but he loses me when he uses jingoistic sloganeering like "islamofascist" to describe the target of his hatred. I fail to see how I can learn from anybody who thinks in such stark black and white terms. I can be amused by them, in much the same way that real thugs, and skinheads are amusing to me, but to actually think that any amount of intellectual dodging and parrying is going to hide the simple mindedness of that ideology is your bag I guess? I can't be privy to it.
And just to sink in how little you know what kind of person I am, one of my best friends is a christian republican, well, after GWB & Co. killing the economy, he's more of a libertarian / screw politics in general kind of guy.
