www.flashkit.com has a very nice library of loops and FX.
In the blue menu bar on the right, under Sound FX or Sound Loops.
The FX stuff is broken down by category, which is handy.
There's fine print below most samples that will tell you if it's free or if you need to purchase a license. Most are free.

http://www.freesound.org/ is the best place, especially for ambiences and off the wall stuff
www.sampleswap.org is also good but watch out as some of this stuff is not totally authorized (public domain, or creative commons).

Whilst they're not free I'd recommend getting some eJay samples. They are generally well produced (maybe over produced), maybe a bit cheesy, very commercial and great fun to play about with.
The best bit is they are really cheap. Either buy some of their old packs on eBay (make sure they have WAV versions of the samples, not all of them do) or get their recently released Virtual Sound packs (3 packs, 25000 WAV samples in each, £20 or less a pack).

Computer Music Magazine - Good for loops/hits (and free vsts), gets a bad rap generaly but kind of ok when your starting out. (Some of the loops are pretty naff mind you, especialy when they try to genre-ise; the Drum & Bass collection was particularly grim)
Loads & heaps of sites online too, just search for wav. files. (Add the word 'free' to your seacrh to avoid the pay sites)
Nice the kids are getting into it, wish mine would!

Live (yoghurt) - MBP- Circuit Bent Rampant Rabbit - Mongolian Nose Flute - 'The Marvelous Mechanical Mouse Organ' (on loan from Bagpuss) and a Swanee Whistle made from a used heroin syringe.
Wow... thanks people. Lots of resource.
For those of you with kids, these rules are currently working well
1. Time for computer gaming is directly traded for homework on a daily basis, 1 hr of homework = 1hr of gaming. You can't bank time.
2. Want to make music, do art etc = free access, but show me the evidence.
