whats the difference between a DAW and ableton ?
Digital:
Available in electronic form; readable and manipulable by computer.
Audio:
of or pertaining to frequencies or signals in the audible range.
Workstation:
1. a work or office area assigned to one person, often one accommodating a computer terminal or other electronic equipment.
DAW = Ableton, Nuendo, Cubase, ProTools, Tracktion, Digital Performer, Sonar(PC only) ect...
However, there are always differences between DAW's. There are some that have more features than others, and some have almost identical features. Ableton, happens to fall into the lesser features category, but is far superior by design, capability, flexibility, and stability. Ableton has all the capabilities of making use of audio and midi firewire/usb interfaces. Reason, still does not have a way to actually record audio into it's sequence or even run VST synths, effects, or external Synths. Fruityloops is PC only and extremely confined also.
Ableton single handed has changed the music production and performance industry for ever. It's stability, ability to customize, and smooth running engine have allowed extreme possibilities with audio and midi for live use. You can achieve the same sound with ableton that you can on any DAW, whether it's virtual or external.
