Yea, not being connected to the internet is a good idea, but I just got a worm off my USB stick that I guess I got from a friend's computer when I brought some tracks over for him to listen to. I only found out about the virus because I plugged the USB stick into another friend's computer and his AV immediately popped up a warning about the worm.

So now I'm trying out Avast...my first time with an AV program after so long on computers. I just thought I was safe being really careful on the net, but apparently having a promiscuous USB stick will get you into trouble as well.

So far I've been pleased with Avast.....did a bootscan and eliminated the worm no problem. My fear is that the AV will cause some problem during performance, but if I turn it off it should be fine?

Yeah, definitely turn it off before running any type of intensive application. Only have it on when you are surfing the net, copying/installing files from questionable sources, to do a scan, exc exc.
