Live recording and mixing

Post by soundtechdan » Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:57 pm

hi

I'm just starting using ableton live for some live recordings. 16 channels of recording. Doing 2 or 3 bands per night I work.

I was just looking to see if anyone had any tips for me about mixing live tracks and recording them?

Also I have some of my first live recording posted on my myspace so I'm looking for some opinions upon the tracks. Just check the link below should send you straight there.

Anything welcome

cheers

Are you using Live for recording and setting the FOH mix?

If so, it might look like this:

Use 16 tracks for FOH-only, outs to the PA, with comp and reverb on inserts and limiter on the master. Map all mutes to one button. Set monitors to ALL. Don't record these tracks. Set your FOH mix here. It would be nice if you had a separate monitor bus just for the FOH.

Then I would take 16 additional tracks, same 16 inputs, with the outputs going to a set of headphones, and no effects. Map one button to record-enable those 16 at once. Deal with the recorded mix later.

This is all prospective since you don't say anything about your interface or control surface. There are a lot of ways to do this.

hi

sorry I have wanted to run it that way but I think that if my computer crashed or something went wrong then I would lose all sound. So I'm just running the direct out of each channels out into 2 presonus firepods.

I will have a look at what you mention though as I say I would like to try it. I would lke to get a digital mixin desk for live work as it will remove most of the outboard gear you need.
