A basic question about "the Sound of Ableton Live"

Post by lanquarem » Wed Nov 10, 2004 10:22 am

Hello out there.

I have a very basic question : Is there any difference when you simply play a sample or a wav file in Live compared with the same operation with other software ? (no time stretch, no effect, just play the sample).

I cannot find any clear answer to this (maybe ridiculous) question

Thanks for any information.

If there is no warping, the sample is played back exactly as it is.

You can verify this by mixing the original sample against a resampled version thats had the phase inverted. Play the sample in Live while recording the output of that track onto another track. Make sure warping is off and volume and pan are set to 0. Now take that resampled version and the original into a waveditor program, like Soundforge. Invert the phase on one of the samples and mix it onto the other 1:1. This should produce a flat line, as the waveforms are exact opposites. If there is anything left after mixing the sample with its phase-inversion, you did something wrong, or i explained something wrong!

I love the phase-inversion test!
