MIDI rewire problems

Post by enomis » Sat Nov 13, 2004 6:29 pm

I'm running MAX/Msp and ableton, and after selecting rewire for MIDI output in MAX, I can't seem to select Rewire or MAX for MIDI input in Ableton. MAX and Rewire do not appear in the MIDI setup in Preferences. Any suggestions?

Hardware Setup:
Sony VAIO 1.8Ghz Pentium 4
Echo Layla 24/96 Sound Card

Software:
Ableton 4.04
MAX/msp 4.5

I presume you're using Live as the ReWire master here and MAX as the slave. In this case,Midi info will go from Live to MAX,but not the other way around.

If MAX can be the master, that's your answer.Start MAX first, select ReWire out and start Live.

Yes live as the rewire master, and Max as the slave. The reason I asked, is that my friend is able to send midi to live from Max in this arrangement on his Mac. We just confirmed this a little while ago. Doesn't work on my PC for some reason. So I guess I'll pose this question again. What gives? Why am I not able to choose Max as the Midi input in ableton?

There IS one other possibility-if you aren't using a multiport MIDI interface, your MIDI port is being used by Live, and MAX won't have access to it.I've seen that kind of problem happen with some ReWired setups...

Mac OS X has CoreMidi which allows you to set up applications as Midi sources and destinations. Windows does not have this capability built into it's Midi implementation. To workaround this you have to use a "Virtual Midi Cable" such as Midi Yoke.
